“Great Stay”
Reviewed April 24, 2014

Sportsmen's is a great place to stay. Definitely not your cookie-cutter high rise. The rooms are spacious, the grounds are lovely, with plenty of room to walk around. The staff seems genuinely happy to work there, and some told us they have been there for over 30 years. The front desk took care of our every need, and no request was too much for them. When we requested a fridge for our room, it arrived in less than 30 minutes, a bad plug was repaired within 15 minutes of calling to report it. The property is very clean and bright. It is usually moderately affordable, but a recent Groupon deal made it exceptionally good. Although it has great food in their Patio Cafe, and refreshing drinks at the Pool bar -the hotel is centrally located and within easy walking distance to many great restaurants and fun eateries. It is directly across the street from a major grocery chain. I do agree with some of the other reviews, though. The new remodeled white on white is very different and modern...really doesn't reflect the wonderfully charming Hollywood history. However, it was easy to spend a week there, and will definitely return on our next visit to LA.

Room Tip: Pool view rooms are brighter, with great views of Hollywood Hills

Where have all the cowboys gone? Sportsmen's Lodge painted the wall of Hollywood theatrical cowboys stark white removing any vestige of the classy and fun location I used to love. Gone also is the fire pit, white Naugahyde circular bench, and elk horn chandeliers. Leaving what was divinely retro as whitewashed and sterile. Goodbye Sportsmen's Lodge. If I wanted to stay at the Holiday Inn, I would have booked there.

We had a first rate experience from the time we drove up and were greeted by two bellmen at the front door. The lobby was beautiful and the entire staff friendly and helpful. It was great fun exploring the beautiful grounds. The pool was beautiful. Our room had a private patio looking onto it. Every where you walked the landscaping was a wonderful surprise.

We all four loved this nice new version of the Sportsmens lodge, iconic place of the valley! Even if not much is left from the old spirit, que rooms are cosy and confortable, the service in the restaurant is as excellent as the food, not to mention the swimming pool, one of the best of Studio City! We also loved the location, very central and all the facilities and commerces near by.

Room Tip: Swimming pool view, is a must, as long as your neighbours are educated people (no parties after 10pm...

We were here in September and have stayed here before because our daughter lives nearby. We can say that the changes to the hotel are evident. Some very good, some make you wonder who the designer was. Fresh paint, new linens, carpet. Bathrooms look good. Beds are great. But what happened to the closet space? My husband compared it to an RV. The closet has been occupied now with drawer storage and coffee maker. Clothes you need to hang will have to compete with the ironing board and iron and a curtain that won't slide out of the way. There was a lot of space left in the room for some type of storage unit for clothes without squeezing it into a corner. It would be nice to have a refrigerator also considering the price. There was no information in the room as to check-out times or where to find the ice maker. Maybe not a big item since we eventually found them by walking around. From our room there was not great view of the valley. Great view of the parking lot and dumpster.

Stayed here in 2010 and pleased to discover the hotel was even better than I remember. Great rooms - spacious, light, well decorated with modern colours and the beds are incredibly comfortable. In fact the quality of the beds is probably the best bit as I didn't get time to enjoy the pool. Close to amenities too as well as universal makes this a great choice.

Found this place through a web search and the service from reservations to check in to "where is the ice?" has been great. The renovation was done recently and things look and perform well. The kids love the warm pool too. Highly recommend when coming to Universal Studios.
