“Good Value But Aged Hotel”
Reviewed June 25, 2013 via mobile

This hotel is great value but a time capsule back to the 70's. We stayed in the hotel on a day rate before a late night flight back home. The day rate price is very reasonable and rooms are very clean. Front desk staff friendliness is nothing special nor is the design of the rooms. The rooms show no sign of wear and tear and are extremely clean but they are a time capsule. The hotel's free LAX airport shuttle is great and frequent. To kill time we caught the $5 shuttle out to Manhattan Beach which is a pretty beachside suburb nearby. The shuttle also stops at Manhattan Mall which has a Macy's store and a sports store just to name a few. There is also a Denny's Diner right next to the hotel. Overall this is an aged hotel but has great value in an even greater location right next to LAX.

Thank you for your review. As with a good wine, the flavor is enhanced with age. Our goal has always been to preserve the original structure of the "motor lodge" while providing our guests with all the modern conveniences of the 21st Century.
The day rate is very popular with our guests. Instead of trying to find a comfortable position in a terminal chair, the hotel provides an option to the traveler to have a bed in which to nap; take a swim; have a meal; shower; take a tour...like the $5 trip to Manhattan Beach.

The Travelodge is "special" in a maybe not so good way. The place looks and feels like a motel in every respect. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but, here, I felt like it was. Anyways, I had a gloomy, second-floor room in the back of the hotel, well past the swimming pool. I know a few of the other reviews recommended avoiding the rooms in back (not that you have much of a choice sometimes) because of bed-bugs, but fortunately I didn't get any bites. In any case, I think my biggest qualm, simply, is that, for the price, things should have been better. Save for the service, nothing stands out as being particularly good. I had to wait on the shuttle for more than hour, even though it's supposed to depart every half hour, because there weren't "enough" people, and breakfast - plastic-wrapped pastries and instant coffee - left me wanting a lot. What's nice, though, is that Denny's is right next door and not too far down the street, maybe a 10 minute walk, there's a Little Ceasers and a Panda Express, as well as an interesting Burger/Mexican/Greek combo joint that's worth checking out if you have time. All in all, this place is fine, but it's nothing great and definitely not worth the $109 price tag. Though, this might be an ideal place for families traveling with pets, because the hotel has a lenient pet policy. My advice is stay if you want but, maybe, keep your eyes peeled for better locations or better deals.

The guest chose to book a standard room at the lower rate which is away from the pool area.
The guest chose to include a reference to "bed bugs" in his comments which obviously reflects his "brained washed" mind set that he indiscriminately applied to the hotel in justifying his rating of 2. ALL hotels/motels regardless of your star rating are mindful of the out burst of "bed bugs" in the United State and through out the world.
Hotels vs. motels -- difference is hotels provide restaurant service and gift shops.
CONTINENTAL breakfast--plastic wrapped Danish--sad when a person TOTALLY misrepresents an amenity to support a negative review--waffles, sausage, coffee, tea, Danish, donuts, yogurt, hot and cold cereals, fruit, 3 fruit juices, cream cheese, etc. --
Shuttle--crux of guest's negative review. He was angry and frustrated by his wait--justified. No one wants to wait at the airport. However, again he prefabricates the reason...not "enough" people. Regardless of whether there is only 1 person, we are at the airport every 30 minutes...was he standing in the correct area and paying attention to the shuttle and not on his cell phone?

It's not fantastic, its ok, but the beds were the MOST comfortable that we had during our (almost) 3 weeks in the US. The only thing that caused us any difficulty was the stairs, but really that was my fault because I just assumed there'd be an elevator ... and no there isn't. So if you're older like us it might be a problem, but they do have a sign saying that assistance is available with your luggage (and I imagine that's because of the stairs). If it's an issue all you'd have to do is ask for a room on the ground floor though!! All in all it was fine, if you want more modern accommodation then stay somewhere else, if you just need a good comfy bed and some breakfast then this hotel will fit the bill. All the staff we encountered were great, very helpful, even the cleaning staff. Oh, nothing to do with the hotel but if youre planning on doing a tour to Universal Studios from the hotel, I wouldnt recommend it, we booked the 3/4 day tour and the tour co. pick you up from the hotel, then they take you to their office to pay, stopping off & picking others up on the way, anyway it took forever just to get to Universal so we had minimum time at Universal and didnt get to see or do half the things we'd wanted there, it worked out we had roughly 4 hrs in between the trip there & back so for well over $100 each spend yr money elsewhere! The tour drivers (there & back) were fantastic though!! This hotel is ok though, dont go expecting first class and then its fine, youll have everything you need, a clean bed, a shower, and breakfast (loved the waffles). Our bathroom was plenty big enough by the way, I see others saying there was no room to put their cosmetics etc, ours had heaps of room on a quite decent size vanity unit.

Thank you for your review. Although we strive to provide a lodging setting that is better than "ok", your review comments were actually very "good". We are a 2 to 3 star property and priced accordingly. Guests whose have realistic expectations as price relates to accommodations and appreciate the opportunity to have open grounds as opposed to a high rise, then we are an option for you. Otherwise, to save yourself from being disappointed, then pay the higher room rates and receive no complimentary amenities except for shuttle service and hopefully you will then enjoy your stay.

Just stayed a day last week. It was very close to the airport, very convenient. But, I must tell you this hotel is not really comfortable. First of all, the noise is intolerable. Not just airplane sound, but the traffic noise. If you are a type of person who can't stand noise, this hotel is not your choice.

Breakfast was okay. With selections of self make waffle, cereal, bagel, so on.

Staying close to the airport has its trade offs. Convenience of location. If you read through the reviews, there will guests who comment on the noise whether airplanes or traffic. The level of noise can be an issue regardless of the hotel in which you chose to stay especially if you do not expect to hear any air traffic. The extend wing of the hotel is a low profile structure that is more insulated from noise...the high rise hotels..especially above the 4th floor, there will be the sounds airplanes make when they take off. You will not have traffic noise. We provide ear plugs for light sleepers.

The downstairs rooms are often used by people with pets. Our room was smelly though not perhaps from pets. The bathroom was very basic. No vanity unit as such, just a basin so nowhere to put any cosmetics etc.
Bed was ok but furnishings very outdated.
Breakfast was different and I suppose almost adequate. Very limited seating, with some outside which was nice on a fibe morning but must be extremely limited seating when it is wet. Disposable plates, cups etc.
Location is ok with access to the local buses only a short walk away.
Be sure to call the establishment when you need a pick up at LAX as unlike the bigger hotels they do not have constant shuttles running .
Denny's is next door and convenient.
For the purpose of a brief stopover this is ok but would not want to stay any longer in the room we had.
For the price one does not expect luxury but something a little better would have been good.
The hotel is spread out and it would be difficult in wet weather to access some rooms as they are a fair walk in the open from reception.

The operative word is "continental" breakfast. Denny's Restaurant adjoins the hotel for guests who want a cooked breakfast. Health codes do not permit food preparation--eggs, bacon, etc. The codes also required all utensils and plates to be disposable. You decide--waffles, sausage, coffee, tea, bagels, cream cheese, peanut butter, yogurt, donuts, fresh fuit, 3 juices, hot and cold cereals--an "adequate" CONTINENTAL breakfast? June 24th an additional room was opened that provides 14 more seats.
"A little better" -- "luxury" -- "disappointed" -- expectations and price; we strive to provide great service, wonderful landscape through which guests can stroll, upgraded room amenities, free CONTINENTAL breakfast, free Wi-Fi, free parking, and free shuttle service and ALL for a moderate price -- if you want the 3 plus star accommodations and be within 3 minutes of the airport, you will pay 30 to 50% more without the free amenities.

This place is like a time capsule from the 1960's, but there's great value behind the garish pink hotel room doors.
We've used this place twice for their excellent day use rate. $55 for a room from 9am-8pm. It's far from flash, but it's a clean and comfy place to put your stuff before a late night flight out of LAX. We took the $5 return shuttle to Manhattan Beach to kill some time before heading back for a shower before our flight. The hotel offers a free shuttle service to and from the airport. Plenty of food options nearby.

Thank you for your review. Surviving 60 years in a business where anything older than 25 years is torn down for high rise, concrete block structure hotels enables our guests to enjoy a "...blast from the past". We have all the modern comforts for our moderately price hotel (old style "motor inn") while displaying the charm of a fifties architectural design with wonderful gardens through which to walk.
