“Checkers has faded.... better alternatives in the neighborhood”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 12, 2008

I am a Hilton Gold Member. My Sister is a Hilton Diamond Member. To achieve these ranks with the Hilton affinity program, you have to stay at a LOT of Hilton Properties per year. We have both stayed at the Checkers Hilton in the past when we come to LA for business. This visit, we each paid $250 per night.
I see in the other reviews the other previous guests (leisure travelers) gave good marks to this property: I am wondering if perhaps these were less seasoned travelers? As seasoned business travelers, we have come to expect more from a business hotel:

THE GOOD:
*Handy Location to Financial District and Staples Center
*Friendly Staff at the front door
*Lovely rooftop pool and patio
*Spa on site

THE BAD:
*Filthy Carpeting- our feet turned black after a short time of going barefoot in our room.
*The bathroom was filthy- it was evident that the cleaning staff does only light daily cleaning and heavy cleaning had not been done for a very, very long time.
*Tile and fixtures dirty and corroded with scale and lime
*NOISY: the staff at the Library next door starts the leaf (garbage) blowers at 6:45am EVERY morning in the common sidewalk betwen the buildings. When I asked the front desk clerk about this, she thought it was funny and told me there was nothing she could do.
*American breakfast for two will set you back over $50.... and it's the same ingredients you get at Hilton's Embassy Suites buffet...including the nearly undrinkable coffee.

The UNFORGIVABLE:
*Since the property is so old, the bathroom fixtures are seperate controls. (non mixing valves) This creates a safety issues whereby it is possible for a person (especialy elderly and children) to scald themselves with hot water. When you shower, the water temp fluctuates between hot, cold, warm and then cold again.
*The Television in one of our rooms was not attached to the furniture properly, and when adjusted fell off the stand and injured my associate.
*No available power outlets at the desk: how is a business traveler supposed to work?
*No power outlet in the bathroom: if you want to use the supplied hair dryer, you must use it in a different room other than the bathroom.
*The air ducts were so visibly filled with dust, when the (weak) air conditioning is turned on, little particles of dust fly out of the duct work.

CONCLUSION:
This property is old and tired... no longer charming. It is in need of a major remodel. If you are going to pay this amount of money for a hotel stay, demand that you receive clean, safe, and quiet lodging. Conrad Hilton himself would be very sad and dissappointed with the lack of attention to detail at this Hilton Property.

We attended a Steely Dan concert at the Nokia theatre and stayed the night at the Hilton Checkers. There were four of us in two rooms and all of us agree that everyone we came into contact with at this hotel was extremely nice. Starting with the doorman, the front desk, the maid who ran up the stairs to get us ice because our floors ice machine was out to the next morning at the restaurant where the service was impeccable. We also got room service that was prompt and flawless! I can't say enough about the service at this hotel. Very pleasant experience!

Just returned from a four-night stay at this gem of a hotel in LA's downtown financial district and cannot say enough good things about the accomodations or the staff. I was attending a convention at the nearby Westin Bonaventure but wanted a quieter, less impersonal hotel and Checkers was within walking distance (although I used cabs or the hotel's complimentary car service at night).

I was able to book a Hilton Reward stay with points, but would readily pay $250-300/night. I had requested a corner king room which was quite spacious with a large bathroom and work desk area. Housekeeping was fantastic and, by asking the front desk to send someone up when I came down for breakfast, my room was immediately and immaculately cleaned. Towels were very plush and large and my requests to have all feather pillows/bedding removed before arrival were filled.

I took advantage of Hilton's pre-arrival offer of a complimentary mini-refrigerator which was set-up and cooled down before check-in. There is a small food store, Fammima, around the corner from the hotel on 5th Street where I picked up bottled water, juice, fruit & yogurt.

Disappointment was my initial reaction to the rooftop pool as it is quite small and, on the weekend, was crowded with a few families. However, on the weekdays I had the rooftop mostly to myself and the view of the surrounding landmark architecture was spectacular! The pool was clean, the lounge furniture well-kept and stocked with towels...a perfect break from meetings!

The bar downstairs was lovely with comfortable couch groupings. I only had breakfast downstairs in the restaurant...which was quite good...but did attend a private function dinner in one of the 2nd floor meeting rooms and the meal was delicious.

IThe staff was extremely helpful, receptive and there were always doormen and security at the front entrance. As I was a woman travelling alone, I did feel that they went out of their way to make sure I had transportation and was welcomed bach on my returns

I had read mixed reviews on this site but I certainly felt that I had a top-quality stay and service!

We stayed at the Hilton for one night on June 29th. We were at the end of an 8 week holiday across the US and had stayed at some basic chain hotels so to have a little bit of luxury at the end was nice. Also we had just spent 4 days on Amtrak so of course we appreciated the Hilton. The check-in staff were very nice and our room was small but the bed was very comfortable. We had a problem with our shower and the maintenace man was there to fix it immediately. We didn't eat at the restaurant which looked a bit expensive but there is a very reasonable Yorkshire Grill just around the corner which the hotel staff were happy to direct us to. There was no problem leaving our luggage in storage for the day while we walked up to the Fashion District for some last minute shopping bargains. The walk was about 6 blocks but very interesting. We were able to use the changing facilities near the pool prior to leaving for the airport. I was surprised at the $55 taxi fare to the airport. Next time I would take a shuttle from the hotel. It is not the hotel shuttle but they could arrange one at $18 per person. A good way to end our US holiday.

Didn't quite know what to expect from the Checkers after reading the reviews here, but we were unbelievably impressed with the hotel and especially with the treatment they gave to Diamond.

+ Full breakfast for two included daily for Diamond. This is a $40 value and can even be taken as room service for a small fee. The breakfasts were amazing, though healthy choices were hard to find.
+ Delivered chocolate-covered strawberries shortly after we arrived without prompting
+ Choice of Diamond amenities was nice (this is how Starwood does it and Hilton should do it more often). Choose from cookies, cheese plate, bottle of wine, etc.
+ Room was clean and well appointed.
+ Downtown location is convenient to shopping and attractions
+ Desk staff helpful with late-night delivery options, bag storage, late checkout, etc.
+ Nice, cozy bar
+ Rooftop pool and jacuzzi are excellent, if small
+ Great views from rooftop workout room

- Room was a bit small, even on the top floor, but no big deal
- No cocktail lounge at the top, no cocktail hour for Honors folks
- Parking is outrageously expensive at $26/day. We tried to find another spot for less but ran out of time/patience.

I get the feeling this place might be a bit less impressive when it's totally full, but I think it was nowhere near full on a February weekend, and the staff and property impressed us.
