The Westin Bonaventure -- built in 1974-76 is a futuristic hotel (from a 40-years-ago perspective, think Kubrick 2001) -- with very good staff. Rooms were renovated about 4 years ago so bathrooms are nice; sleep quality was very good on tenth floor (Rm. 1072). Glass elevators and four pods give you the Space 1999 vibe.
Two areas for improvement: First, the gym is undersized. Stayed three nights; each trip to the gym the treadmills were full and required a wait. Memo to management: the lack of treadmills is a negative to today's business traveller.
Second, the gift shop embraces the hotel's city-within-a-city approach a bit too much. Neosporin tube was $14.99 -- like, wow, I could buy two and half tubes at the ripoff LAX place. Downtown LA has really become cool, so the antidote is to leave behind George Jetson and walk down S. Flower Street (nice walk with the LA Library cool building, etc.) over to S. Hope and 7th Street to Walgreens (and across the street Rite Aid).
Downtown LA really has improved over the years. Having stayed 30 years ago at the Westin Bonaventure, the surrounding area has improved with restaurants. Public School 213 (W. 6th and S. Flower) is great -- gluten free, vegan etc. along with beer. Spear Steak & Seadfood looked good.
And LA has great restaurants away from The Jetsons, such as Spago's and Lucques, to name two.
Really liked the staff. Glad to have Starbucks in the lobby.
