“A well restored classic hotel.”
Reviewed June 2, 2014

Stately old hotel that is as charming as it gets. Clean rooms with comfortable beds. They could cut back on the pillows and add a couple chairs{ There was none at the desk}. Bathrooms clean and well supplied. We came by train and took the subway three stops and walked one short block to the hotel. Very convenient. Staff all very helpful. A great place with lots of charm.

Impressive looking facade and reception (when you find it). It was very dark inside and would have been great in its day but the rooms were in definite need of modernising. The bedroom was high but the bathroom was tiny-you could hardly turn round in it. Because the paint was peeling off I didn't feel that it was clean. There were 2 miniatures of shampoo and conditioner but no body lotion, which I really missed. There was the sell of smoking in the corridor and a maid told us that it was a smoking floor. I think in this day and age smoking should be banned here like in other hotels. It smelt really stale and the maid told us she was allergic to it. The hotel, although downtown, was very isolated. No shops nearby or restaurants. At least their restaurant Bugis was fine, though overpriced. Breakfast was good.

The hotel is in the heart of the business sector of LA, no shops in vicinity or many other restaurants. On entering the hotel it felt like entering a medieval castle, I expected the concierge to be wearing a suit of armour. Our room was enormous an well appointed, but the bathroom was so small you had difficulty turning round. The hotel restaurant was good quality, but I felt a little expensive, the breakfast was good but everything you put on your plate had a dollar sign in front, not good value.

OMG.... What an amazing hotel! Very romantic. While the room was not big, it was so charming. Very clean.... The staff so wonderful. The breakfast cafe has the best eggs Benedict I have ever had! WILL stay again.

A three day stay in May began with a twenty minute wait in a queue at the check-in desk, at 5.30PM.

Despite requesting a quiet room three months earlier when we booked, we were assigned one on the tenth floor that was immediately adjacent to a very noisy air conditioning unit. On approaching reception we were advised that the hotel was full and we subsequently spent a sleepless night with the continuous noise. The room was changed the next morning for one on the eleventh floor. In the process, the receptionist indicated that they knew of the noise issue with the air conditioner unit.

The bathrooms were dated and well worn, particularly the taps and basins. External building finish of window frames was very poor on the eleventh floor with paint flaking away from very old and weathered timber. It was consistent with a building over ninety years old.

WiFi costs $9.95 a day unless you are in the Club Lounge.

It was rather odd that a tour booked through the Concierge could not be charged to the room account too? The Concierge required a cash deposit to be made with the remainder being paid to the bus tour driver.

The history and grand style architecture was a feature in the lobby and the associated areas. Equally, the historical Academy Award photographs scattered around the ground floor demonstrated the grandeur of this hotel as it was in the twenties.

The Club Lounge was relaxed as soon as the Memorial Day holiday guests departed. Young children were permitted to run and play around the tables at breakfast time without any correction. Apart from that, service was good and friendly.

The highlight for us was the Bugis Street Restaurant beneath the hotel. Great Singaporean food and excellent service.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a Club Room but avoid the air conditioning units at all costs.

Comparing this hotel to other, modern 5* hotels is like comparing a 1930's Duesenberg to a 2014 BMW: no, there is no navigation system, tiptronic or memory power seats. But there is quality of workmanship, opulence and a genuine feel of bygone era. The common areas are a museum, and are familiar due to many movies, old and new, filmed here.
Rooms are fairly good size and very clean. Ours had a walk-in closet and a powder area. Furniture is dated but in great shape. Very comfortable bed. The only negatives I can think of are thin windows and a looong trek to an ice machine (every other floor, far end). Housekeeping is some of the best out there - prompt and efficient. Any request (extra coffee, toothpaste) is delivered within 3 minutes!
We did not encountered any problems with staff, front desk or concierge. However, we rarely do -treat them with smile and respect, and you will be surprised how accommodating and friendly they are.
We did not eat at any of the restaurants, we dined in West Hollywood and Santa Monica. We had a few drinks at the bar every night, they are pricey, but they are very generous with size and alcohol!
The health club is small, pool is dated but clean and very enjoyable. But the thought of the people that used this pool over the years, and movie scenes filmed there makes up for its lack of modernity. The sauna is very good.
There are several coffee shops in a building next door, with reasonable variety/sandwich shop for quick breakfast or snacks. There are plenty of eateries within 5 minute walk.
I would definitely recommend Biltmore if staying downtown. However, it is quite a distance from Hollywood, Beverly Hills and beaches. Overall, we definitely had a grand time to remember.

Room Tip: Rooms on lower floors facing streets tend to be noisy. We stayed on 8th floor, it was OK, upper floo...

We visited for two night in May 2014. The hotel exudes old world charm. An impressively beautiful lobby and welcome area.

Easy check in process. Friendly staff. Nobody helped with our luggage though.

The room we stayed in was comfortable. A bit basic though. There was no mini bar. The walls are very thin though so we could hear our neighbors all night. Our sleep was very interrupted. You could also hear almost every sound from the corridor.

No meals are offered with the booking. Bed only. There is a room service option and there are places to eat nearby. The concierge was friendly and knowledgeable. She made good recommendations.

The hotel is located on Pershing Square. It is easy to get around; on foot, by bus or by train.

Check out was easy.

An average to good stay - and admittedly short.
