I went there for an afternoon pick-me-up, and tried the flourless chocolate Tarte. It was a dream. The coffee was great too. The gift shop had an eclectic set of very interesting, unique items such as books, gag gifts, novelties, Japanese china, vases, and more. The place seems like a neighborhood standby that attracts people and maintains their customers over the years.

The food was very ordinary, not very tasty, and at the end when i saw the bill i couldnt believe it. I left hungry and went elsewhere to eat!

This visit to LA, I went to the Rose for Sunday brunch. It was almost full but without a reservation, we had a nice table immediately in the covered courtyard. Crowded but not noisy...so important. It has expanded from my early visits many years ago when I went more often but the outside area is very nice..inside I am not sure it is as comfortable but outside; just lovely. Food excellent as well as service. The added touch of a gift shop which now, of course, sells a Rose t-shirt has been a cute part of the place. This is really Venice not LA, I think or maybe Santa Monica. definately worth the drive, (My mother's name was Rose so maybe that's why it has a special place in my heart!)

Tried the salmon and one of the egg dishes (florentine I belive).
Salmon tasted old and not fresh at all. Fishy and pre-cooked -- so dry!!
Eggs were greasy and too salty. Outdoor patio can be nice, but it was packed and loud!!
Incredible food just across the street at the little place with sidewalk seating -- Sauce on hampton. Had about six great meals there!

Still a local favorite, it has nice vibe and something for everyone - the gift shop is cool, you can eat the high stools more casually and outside on the patio if you prefer something quick, and the dining room and covered courtyard turn out great food.
