“Fantastic location, Decent Hostel”
Reviewed July 13, 2014 via mobile

My friend & I, from the UK and road tripping across the USA, stayed at Orange Drive for 4 nights, inc. July 4th. Below are the positive and negative things about the hostel.

+ Location - incredible location. I had read that it was round the corner from the Hollywood Walk of Fame but had expected this 'corner' to be 10 minutes away. I was wrong, it's literally a minute walk to the end of the road then BAM, you see the Stars on the pavement, the Chinese theatre etc. on our first walk down there was also a film premiere going on here, which was a really cool thing to walk into !

+ Staff. Friendly and helpful staff across the board. Checked in by a nice chap who we also watched a couple of the World Cup games with. There was also a woman whom was always around in the morning to give a helping hand with the waffles (this was the free breakfast).

+ Parking. Although we had to pay $5 (I think) a day, I think you'd find it hard to find anywhere so cheap in such a great location.

- Bedbugs. After we left Orange Drive I had a lot of bite marks on my back.

- Noise. It can be pretty loud, the walls are thin so take earplugs. I also heard gunshots on two separate nights which was pretty crazy.

I would recommend it to everyone!

Recently stayed here for 3 nights in a private room with private bathroom. We arrived a few hours before check in opened but were allowed to leave our stuff at reception while we explored. Came back later to check in and had to wait a few extra minutes while they checked our room was ready. After leaving a $50 key deposit we got shown to our room. We didn't get a tour of the place like you usually get in hostels, but everything was easy to find so no real problems there.

The room was neutrally decorated, very clean and the ensuite bathroom was small but clean. We were in a basement room and weren't sure if the curtains, both in the room and bathroom, fully hid the room from the outside (there were gaps at each end of the window). The only other issue we had with the room is that the window looked out onto a car park so headlights would shine in at night and illuminate the room. Rooms could do with some blackout curtains or blinds, but otherwise they're very nice. It's an old house and sound travels so make sure you bring earplugs!

They have a free DIY pancake/waffle breakfast until 10am but when we turned up at 9:30 one day and they were all out of pancake mix. We got there earlier the next few days. They did also have muesli but no milk. Breakfast time got really busy. The kitchen area is small and there aren't many places to sit so if you want breakfast here, try and get up
a bit earlier.

The location is perfect. Right off Hollywood Boulevard, but in a quiet back street. It felt peaceful returning here after the craziness of walking down Hollywood Boulevard!

The hostel is very good value for money. You get a great location, nice clean rooms and a breakfast for a small price. A great place to stay on a budget.

Hello,
We appreciate the feedback and have changed the curtains in the room that you stayed in. The curtains now fully cover the windows and are thicker to block out the sun so that the room stays cooler in the summer.
We don't provide milk because we had an issue with some guests drinking from the milk bottles. There is a grocery store just around the corner where milk can be purchased. We do provide dry creamer which can be used in place of milk if needed.
Thank you for taking the time to write a review and helping make our hostel an even better place to stay.
Kind regards,
Orange Drive Hostel

I has originally only intended to stay for three nights, however I hadn't achieved everything I wanted to in LA. When I asked about extending my stay they where very helpful & this was no problem.
As everyone has already mentioned in their reviews you could not get a better location than this hostel, especially at their prices!!
Luckily everyone else that was staying there whilst I was there, were all very friendly & interactive with each other. Even when deciding on an early night the room mates were very accommodating! :)
Having breakfast every morning was a nice bonus too. And not feeling obliged/requested to give a donation like other hostels request was a very nice touch.
The staff were all very helpful & didn't bat an eyelid at the numerous times I bugged for directions & would happily print these out if they weren't already provided on the info table.
Appeared to be plenty of bathrooms, however I didn't have to really use any others as the one near my bedroom appeared to be free most of the time!

The only downside is no air con in the bedroom.

I would definitely recommend this hostel to family & friends!

Great location to see everything in Hollywood yet at the same time feel like your away from masses.
Also, it us a cool heritage home with its own sense of history.
It is not a social place, everyone seems to stay to themselves. Being old, noise travels in this place so you can hear everyone walking up and down the corridor which is a little annoying. And the bed was very thin.
Overall though, a pleasant place to stay.

Within one hour of being in our room we found bugs crawling in the bed, and within a few hours we were being moved into another room. We found in total five bugs. At first we were unsure whether they were bed bugs or not but after googling were now 99% sure they were. A mattress appeared on the sidewalk a couple of days later, which pretty much confirmed it. Now were having to take precautions and wash and spray all of our luggage. Apart from this, the hostel was just ok. No aircon, no tv, very loud (earplugs needed).

We take claims of bed bugs very seriously! We have professional companies with bug sniffing dogs whom we work with. We encase all mattresses and box springs in plastic, all pillows have anti mite protectors on them. We have periodic inspections and treat rooms on a rotating basis. Without question, when this claim was made, we immediately moved the guest before they even unpacked their suitcases. We are sorry for any inconvenience that we did not have another en suite room available immediately. Unfortunately, the guest had to additionally move to two different rooms. There were no bites, or further bug issues brought to our attention during the rest of their stay. We had the room inspected immediately and have the inspection report which states no evidence of any bed bugs in the room. The mattress on the street did not belong to us. This is a residential neighborhood and it is not uncommon to see a bed or sofa waiting on the street for the city to come and remove it. For the last several years, we have been renovating the hostel in every respect, and our reviews have very nicely reflected that.
Kind Regards,
Orange Drive Hostel

Stayed here with my wife for a few nights near the end of April 2014.

Good Hollywood location. As folks say - a stones throw from the famous Hollywood sights but still away from the bustle.

Hostel was clean, staff friendly. Room was spacious and sparse.

Our room was near the bathroom and above the kitchen and we found it to be very noisy. Sounds and smells were rising into our room regularly and late night bathroom calls created some restless evening moments. So it goes with an older building.

This is the only accommodation during our Cali vacation where I had need to break out the ear plugs.

Fairly decent all around though. I wouldn't advise you against booking if you're looking for a clean, inexpensive well located tourist accommodation while visiting LA/Hollywood.

Perfect if you want to stay close to the most touristy location in Los Angeles.
Clean and a very lovely staff. The kitchen caretaker is forever in my heart.
A bit expensive compared to other places. But nice beds. Clean and close to the walk of fame.
