Cooked and fresh produce available. I got a pack of blueberries for $0.89 and a two portion chinese plate with rice for $5. Both were very tasty.

This market doesn't quite have the selection of LA's Farmer's Market (the one on Fairfax), or the quality perhaps, but still, we like to eat here when we're in downtown LA. There's a good selection of foods, the value is good, and we like the atmosphere of the hustle and bustle, all the little shops and tiny windows, etc.. It's just a more authentic experience than eating in the food court of a mall. Also, the location is good: right at the base of Angels Flight.

Add Grand Central Market to your visit of historic Los Angeles. Angels Flight is on one side and the Bradbury Building is on the other. The central Library is two blocks one way and Clifton's, when it reopened is two blocks the other direction.

There is nothing artificial at the Grand Central Market. It is what it is, there are efforts to change it into a yuppie food court. But that will require a great deal of time and money. The Chinese restaurant has egg foo young and real chow mein. It is a time travel trip to eat there.

If you've been to LA's Farmer's Market, this is a let down. I've read about The Grand Market in my LA travel books and it was on my agenda. I think the Farmer's Market on 3rd and Fairfax is a destination when visiting LA. I think the Grand Market is a good Cheap Eats with ethnic diversity if you are downtown, but, I don't think it can stand on it's own as a destination. It's slightly gritty. To access the bathroom, it's 25 cents to open the bathroom door-I guess this is to discourage the homeless. I bought some delicious fruit there and again lots of ethnic food choices.

Tip: Have lunch, then cross the street to ride the Angel Flight trolly

We stopped here after reading a good review in Fodor's on this market. We live near Cleveland, Ohio and the reviews made it sound like the Westside Market that has tons of eclectic foods for purchase and restaurants. This place does not. It's not worth the trip. It's mainly restaurants with a few fruit and vegetable stands. There were locals eating at the restaurants and that's about it. The produce stands did not have good produce. It's not a big place and it's fairly dirty. Please do not go out of your way to go there. Oh and, you have to pay to use the bathroom. I think it's only 25 cents, but you have to put the money in before the door will open. The only plus about going there is that the Bradbury building is right across the street. It's not a recognizable building from the outside, but you'll recognize the inside immediately. Lots of movies are filmed there.
