“Little Tokyo in San Fernando Valley”
Reviewed October 9, 2012

Introduced to this soul food Japanese restaurant by my son, it has become a family favorite. An extensive menu with chicken, fish and sushi, they specialize in pan frys with garlic, topped with red ginger. I particularly like the Kawachi Chicken or Salmon as it is served with steamed carrots, macaroni salad, watermelon slice and a bowl of rice.

Everything is authentic from the sing song greetings, to the repetition of the order interlaced with stacato Hai's. The food is excellent, the service even better. They have recently added beer and wine, and sake to an adventurous drink menu. Even the desserts are interesting. I suggest the gooey steamed cheescake. Strange texture but oh so flavorful.

It can get crowded and it is not uncommon to queue up for a table. Parking on the street, meters till 8PM, or in the small lot out front.

“Great home-style Japanese cooking”
Reviewed July 9, 2012

This is an endearing place in a strip mall next to the famous Sugarfish (Nozawa) sushi bar. It features homestyle Japanese cooking. Top quality ingredients, friendly service, a fun atmosphere, it has it all and is very family friendly unlike it's glitzy neighbor. Recommend the poki bowl.

“Family owned Japanese comfort food.”
Reviewed February 1, 2012

Daichan is amazing. Everything on their extensive menu is amazing. Their kitschy decor is amazing. Their servers are adorable. I promise that you could order anything on the menu and it would be delicious. Feeding a mixed group of carnivores, vegetarians and vegans? Daichan has you covered. It's small, intimate, visually interesting, and did I mention the food?

I've tried the tempura bowl, the Hawaiian ramen noodles, the cucumbers with miso, and the sukiyaki. Each dish was prepared perfectly, even the rice was good!! Its a very small place and fills up quickly, so expect to wait if you're there during peak hours. Order some tea - it's cheap and good - and relax and enjoy your meal!

“Japanese food like my grandma in Japan makes”
Reviewed December 8, 2011

Ive been coming to Daichan for over 13 years. I love the food. It is soul food, every dish my grandma and mom make at home in Japan is here. Complete comfort food and so delicious!! I love how every inch is covered with Japanese decorations. The prices are great and the service is excellent. You will not be disappointed!

Favorites: curry, potato croquette, salmon tsukune, stuffed pumpkin, donburi. I'm salivating as I write this.

“A bowl of udon to die for”
Reviewed October 26, 2011

Tucked away in a little strip mall, this is a cozy restaurant inside, the walls covered from top to bottom with art and artifacts and menu drawings. This is definitely not a sushi destination, but if you're in the mood for "Japanese comfort food" (as they call it themselves), this is the place to go. The udon bowls and broths are unbelievable. My favorite is the house udon, which you can get with chicken or tofu (my preference). Each spoonful is heaven, a rich broth with perfectly textured udon noodles and enough veggies to round out the meal. Husband's favorite is the tempura udon bowl. Also good are the poki bowls, with your choice of raw fish toppings on rice, salad and ginger. Start with a little appetizer size of sesame seaweed or spinach to wake up the taste buds. Inexpensive and delicious, you can't go wrong here.
