“Take a Pal to Hal's”
Reviewed July 19, 2012

Love Hal's Bar.

Venice is a hip, funky, artsy place. Hal's Bar is crowded many nights, especially Friday and Saturday evenings. The bar section is small and when it fills up, quickly learn body language and maneuver yourself over to the folks who begin to "act like" they are preparing to leave.

The bar service is great. Drinks a delicious. Many of the patrons are from Venice. My first night there I sat between a painter and an Austrian sculptor living in L.A. Cool conversation.

Food was yummy, lacked nothing.

I've also been to Hal's in the early evening for dinner with a teen. She loved the atmosphere and the food.

Before or afterward, walk along Abbot Kinney to window shop or browse interesting stores.

How do I know? I'm a native Angeleno!

“Pretty darn good for "casual" dining ...”
Reviewed July 1, 2012

The place is unpretentious and laid back -- but the menu is surprising interesting, and the food lives up to its reputation for being way above average. The Venice vibe is evident, but that doesn't take away from the attentive service and truly genuine attention provided by their wait staff (who obviously understand the concept of team). I was with a rather large party, so a wide variety of entrees were served -- each recipient was pleased, and we all left with a good impression (one of which says, "we'll be back"). The wine list was average -- but there were two selections I found that I wanted. As for the parking -- well, they do offer valet parking -- which to me, is worth it! I'd go back for sure.

“Best on Abbott Kinney”
Reviewed June 4, 2012

Lively spot for a drink or fine food. A locals hangout forever. They know they are in for a fun filled evening of excellent food and drink. Awesome ice cream sundae desert. Great burger and fries. Good for star sightings. Is that Julia Roberts at the next table? Hal is frequently i the house - which is likely one of the reasons the place has been so popular for years and years.

“Neighborhood hang in a great neighborhood”
Reviewed May 28, 2012

It's not that Hal's is the greatest fine dining establishment, it's that it represents the essence of Venice with really good food, service, ambiance and a slice of life of the Venice vibe. It always has the most interesting mix of people; all ages, races, couples, singles, large groups of friends. Venice, being the home of many important LA artists, is, in itself, a great place to take a walk before dinner or after lunch and ABBOTT KINNEY BLVD has a fabulous array of stores and galleries (no GAP here). Hal's is open all day from very early to very late, it has the most happening bar where one can also eat and it is decorated with wonderful art which changes now and then. Hal is a most gracious host and the resto serves the best half chicken and fries (stellar) and a sensational caesar salad plus many other great choices. We've been patrons since their opening over 20 years ago and tho we no longer live in Venice we are still happy and frequent patrons. If you are looking for a great casual beachy meal, try it. Also they have jazz on Sunday and I think Monday nites.
