Good for: Business meetings, Special occasions, Bar scene, Romantic, Large groups
Dining options: Breakfast, Late Night, Dinner, Reservations
Dining style: Casual Elegant
Cross street: Franklin Avenue
Transit: Metro Red Line to Hollywood & Highland. Walk west down Hollywood Blvd turn right on Orange and cross at the light on Franklin. Once you cross at the light go left and turn right at sycamore going up the hill. It is a very steep hill so walking in dress shoes or in the dark are not recommended. We suggest calling a cab at the bottom of the hill.
Description: Yamashiro - translated to "mountain palace" - broke ground in 1911 and was completed in 1914 as a residence for the Bernheimer brothers. Housing a priceless collection of Asian treasures, the building was designed as a replica of a palace located in the mountains near Kyoto, Japan. During the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, Yamashiro served as the ultra-exclusive hang-out for the "Club of the Four Hundred": the era's most famous and influential stars and movie moguls. The structure and its grounds served as a boy's military school and later apartments before being acquired in 1948 by the Thomas O. Glover, who discovered the beauty beneath the disrepair and refurbished the space. Currently owned by Thomas Y. Glover, Yamashiro is still flourishing over 60 years later as an Asian-inspired Los Angeles institution.

“Super View but.......”
Reviewed March 28, 2014

On the recommendation of The Magic Castle hotel below and at very short notice we were whisked up the hill by complimentary limo to a table with an extraordinary Imax view of Hollywood. From a fairly limited menu we chose a bunch of starters including ribs, crab cakes, popcorn chicken and a 10 piece sushi selection ($34) and and a cheapo Marlborough Nobilo Sauvignon Blanc, a 10 dollar bottle in any supermarket - it cost a whopping $54 which I had read as $24 in the dimly lit ambiance. The place was full, the atmosphere vibrant and the food was OK but in no terms was it authentic Japanese cuisine. Apart from the view I can think of nothing to lure me back to Yamashiros.

“Great meal with a spectacular view and delightful setting”
Reviewed March 21, 2014

I ate here as a guest as part of a business dinner for 8 of us starting shortly before sunset midweek. Although the restaurant became busy during the evening, it never seemed loud or hectic.

Service was excellent and surprisingly efficient as items were delivered and empty plates removed unobtrusively. The scallops were cooked perfectly, and arrived with all the other diner's entrees. I especially liked the coconut ice cream in the dessert selection. The view of the LA basin was spectacular, and the restaurant itself, situated high on a hill, seemed a peaceful oasis. The ambience was excellent. Prices were on the high side, as would be expected. I was glad I had the chance to dine there, and also glad someone else was paying.

“Spectacular view!”
Reviewed March 18, 2014

We only had drinks and nice appetizers, but we went on purpose for the astonishing Hollywood view. From here, especially if you go at sunset, you will have the most fantastic view of Hollywood and Los Angeles you can imagine. It's right above the magic castle, not to be missed! Great pictures!
