“It's Lamb dip Double Dip, not the Beef Dip for me”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 16, 2013

This is old time LA...saw dust on the floors and long wooden tables to share. Get in one of the lines in front of the counter and one of the nice ladies will prep your meal and serve it. It's nothing fancy. I grew up having the "Double Dip Lamb Sandwich" Delicious. In addition, choices a number of salads and sides: cole slaw, potato salad, macaroni salad...go for potato. The sandwiches are served multiple ways (Dry - dip on the side, wet - dipped, or double dipped). At the long wooden tables where you sit community style, just find a seat...you will find "hot mustard" which is fairly powerful. It has tons of horseradish in it...great when you have a cold. It's worth noting that this place is CASH ONLY. This is a go to before Dodger games as a "to go" meal. Two small lots for free parking (one on the opposite side of the street) and some metered street parking.

“It's the History”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 16, 2013

Let's understand...don't go here expecting a sophisticated dining experience. This is a look into the past and can even be a bit frustrating at times when it is very crowded. But if you haven't been yet, you owe it to yourself to experience it. You may even become one of the thousands of devotees. And if you keep your eyes open, you may still see some semi-famous Southern Californian's eating next to you!

First time? only one choice -- French Dip!!

“What a Treat”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 14, 2013

We were visiting LA for the first time and Phillipe's was suggested. It is only a short walk from Union Station. We ordered the beef french dip $6.50, a side of potato salad, a side of macaroni, a slice of french apple pie, ice tea and lemonade to drink . (no I did not eat it all myself, my wife and I split it) IT WAS STILL ALMOST TOO MUCH. We did not know what to expect so, we were stunned when we walked in it was like going back in time. Long lines in which to order (they moved fast) people everywhere. Long tables, short tables, tables for 4, tables for 6 and booths. Every item we ordered had a prepared in house taste. IT WAS GREAT.

It has become a must upon our return to LA.

“the real Los Angeles”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 14, 2013

Whether you're from out of town or living in LA, you've got to experience Philippe's at least once - I've been going since I was a child, and it's never really changed: great sandwiches, lemonade and coleslaw in a cozy place with sawdust on the floor. A little taste of old Los Angeles.
