my wife and I love sushi - we have experienced sushi restaurants around the world - sushi gen rocks! on weekends get to the restaurant no later than 4:15pm - they open the doors at 5:00pm and officially they open at 5:30pm! Any later and you are waiting a long time! This early arrival gets you a front row seat with the sushi chefs at the sushi bar - their deep friend shrimp heads are awesome - but it's the freshness and true sushi presentation and expertise that makes sushi gen the best. The only downside is that afterwards you are ruined because other sushi restaurants will pale in comparison. The price per person for our group of 4 was around $ 125.00 per person - well worth the experience and for out of towners the restaurant is located in JapanTown and the shabu shabu place next door is also one of the best of it's kind. Try the grilled fish heads - awesome!

This no frills sushi restaurant serves fresh top of the line sushi. My favorites include the Japanese snapper or scallop, both with salt and lemon. They also have Kumomoto oysters. If you order California rolls, try another spot as your money will be wasted at this yummy place. There can be a wait so be patient...it is worth it.

After 14 days holiday in California this was the top. We were so lucky to sit in the bar. Very fresh and not too small servings like in some other places. Not a cheap lunch, but worth every cent.

You know a place is good when there's queues of people waiting to get in when the area is surrounded by other sushi options.

This ain't no run-of-the-mill sushi joint.

Found Sushi Gen on Yelp on our first trip to Los Angeles in 2011, and it was the highlight of our few days there. There was no way we were going to miss going back again on this trip (in fact, twice in our four nights in town). It's fresh, the menu has great unusual traditional Japanese options, it's fast, it's perfect.

Don't miss it.

Little Tokyo is a very cool place to walk around before or after dinner, too.

We ate there on a Thursday for lunch. They are open at 11:15am and the lines were getting quite long by the time we arrive around 10:45.

Seating: There are two seating areas in the restaurant: sushi bar and table seating. The sushi bar will only allow you to order sushi (no ordering from the lunch menu) and there's a minimum order of 4 sushi orders per person. I've never really heard of a sushi restaurant having minimum orders and $6 charge if you share your meal with the people you are with. The table seating (that's where we sat) offers the menu items.

Food: I won't write too much about the food, since the other reviews are accurate. We ordered the sashimi deluxe and the sashimi lunch. The sashimi lunch comes with rice, miso soup, and some small appetizer items (tofu, cabbage). The assortment of fish was great (couple of types of tuna, snapper, squid, yellowtail, cooked salmon. We were disappointed that the sashimi lunch did NOT have sashimi salmon. The sashimi deluxe was similar to the sashimi lunch, but more fish and include two very small pieces of salmon. There was no rice or soup with the deluxe.

Price: Sashimi lunch was a bargain at $15. The sashimi deluxe was reasonable at $30.

Service: The service was pretty fast, as I'm pretty sure the sashimi was cut in the morning and they just place it onto a plate when you order. We didn't have too much interaction with the wait staff, so I can't comment on the quality per se. There was a long line of people waiting for our seat, so they brought out the bill and pretty much cleaned out table while we were finishing our last bite of fish. I didn't like that very much, but I understand where they are coming from.

Lines: Be prepared to wait in line, even if you have a reservation. My suggestion is to make a reservation a day or so before, even if it's for 2 people. It seemed like the average wait time was about 30-45 minutes to get a table, once you fight your way into the restaurant. Even those who had reservations has to wait 30 minutes to get a table. Tey will not seat your party until everybody is present, so keep that in mind if you have several different people join you.

Bottom line: Lunch was quite reasonably priced and the quality was top notch. I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle of rushed service and long lines. If you haven't had high quality sushi, it's definitely worth a visit once.
