“Imaginative preparations with an earthy goodness.”
Reviewed December 8, 2012 via mobile

Unusual preparations and unusual selections. Delicious rabbit liver spread on toast with fig jam. Unique vegetarian alternatives. Outstanding lamb stew with sunflower seeds. Succulent rabbit with pear. Odd desserts but fun for the adventurous. Worth the drive downtown.

“Worth the Trek”
Reviewed November 30, 2012

Don't drive too quick or you will miss it. Alma is a small space just south of a **girly bar** on the far end of Broadway. They took a risk opening before the new Ace Hotel was complete so for now the neighborhood is "transitional". The food is "California Cuisine" so don't come too hungry. Everything was tasty and different. We really enjoyed the chicken and the soup. Try their home made sodas YUM! We tried basically everything on their menu and we weren't disappointed. It's worth the trek to the far end of Downtown. It's small and cozy. Romantic if you will. Just make sure to BYOB as they don't sell beer or wine yet. The staff and owner were very nice and you can make reservations just know they don't answer their phone when they're open.

“Go. Now.”
Reviewed November 24, 2012

On a dingy downtown street, in a random storefront sits an experimental restaurant. Food is gourmet style, local farm fresh, small portion but with extreme flavor profiles to make up for it. Prices are very reasonable compared to other eateries of this style; appetizers ~$6, salads/soups ~$10, non-meat dishes ~$18 and meat $24-26. Portions are small so do expect to try three courses which will run you $40-50/person.

There are a few caveats; the menu is very small, if you have picky eaters who are not willing to eat outside their comfort zone they may find the menu lacking. There is at least one full set of options for vegetarians. The advantage of a small menu is that a group of four that is willing to share, can confidently order one of everything and enjoy their own tasting menu (they also do half price tasting menu on Tues for ~$40). The menu changes daily, so even if the menu on-line was from two days ago, there may be changes. Your server is super friendly and will be happy to give a laymen explanation of anything on the menu.

As there are less than 10 tables, reservations via opentable, even last minute, are highly recommended, especially if you have a group.

Food is all amazing. Deep fried brussels sprouts are a must, even if you've never liked them before. Soups are creamy and poured from mason jars at your table.

Currently they are BYOB w/ no corkage, at least until they get their beer/wine license! Hopefully they will continue this tradition while they continue to establish themselves.
