I took my family to Bombay Cafe recently, for the first time in a few years. What a disappointment! All of the meat was overcooked and dry, and everything had exactly the same nondescript spice flavoring. The vegetable dish we ordered was completely tasteless, except for, again, that rather nondescript spicey flavoring. Rather than bringing our salads first, they brought every dish at exactly the same time. To make matters worse, service was very slow, and when we asked for our check, it took at least ten minutes for it to come. Even though the restaurant was mostly empty!

I read good reviews about this place and it has been ranked as being the best amongst Indian restaurants in LA. We went to this restaurant for dinner last weekend. We ordered probably the most expensive dish on the menu, Fish Tandori. It was terrible! It was overdone, very fishy and definitely not fresh! The pudina (mint) chutney accompanying the fish was extremely bitter and salty. The raita was as good as a sweet dish. The chicken that we ordered was left half eaten because it was not tasty at all. The only half way decent dish was paneer makhani. But it was with mushrooms. This is the first time I had seen mushrooms in paneer makhani which were serving as fillers and were tasteless, large chunks.
The pulao was some mishmash of spinach and rice. It was dry and boring.
The worst of all was the attitude of the waitress. When we pointed out that fish was very fishy, our waitress shrugged her shoulders, blurted a quick sorry and bolted. She did not return to our table except to deliver the check. Ofcourse, we were charged for this fish!
We hated the food and it was very expensive. Please stay away!

The Bombay Cafe has long been my favorite Indian restaurant on the West Coast. Imaginative flavor combinations, freshly prepared food with fresh ingredients and spices, pleasant decor. I travel often up and down California and had always made it a point to stop in at the Bombay Cafe for lunch or dinner....even if it meant rearranging a schedule. BUT NO MORE. Please be forewarned. Since the restaurant changed ownership about a year ago, it has steadily gone downhill. I had hear the new owners agreed to use Neela's
recipes, but they clearly do not have the penchant for fine dining
and the passion for good food that Neela had. This place is now, like so many mediocre Indian restaurants, for people who do not know what good food is.
