“Excellent location for a car free traveler”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 9, 2011

I stayed three nights at the Wilshire Crest Hotel and liked it very much. The room was big, quiet (I didn't notice any neighbor noises), and dark at night. It certainly wasn't fancy--there wasn't even a radio (and blessedly no minibar). The furnishings are perfectly fine, but not stylish. The Wilshire Crest is a two story hotel with no elevator, and there are no views to speak of, although the Orange St. side looks out on a pleasant residential street. There's free wireless internet, unlikely some fancier places I stayed. Staff was helpful.

I almost never eat free hotel breakfasts, they rarely seem to be much good, and there are lots of good places close by for breakfast. At $125 per night, the money you save compared to other area hotels will fund your breakfast.

There were a couple of hiccups, the room door one room required some jiggling of the key to open. The flush handle on the toilet was a little loose--it worked OK, but it should have been fixed and wasn't. I actually stayed in two different rooms because there was a break in my stay--both were good.

As previous reviewers have noted, you can walk to a lot from here--the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and "Museum Row", the Farmers Market/Grove, restaurants on 3rd St. There's a strip mall with several restaurants a block away on Wilshire Blvd.--Cafe Latte is a very nice breakfast/lunch place. Walkscore--which rates how accessible stores and services are by walking--gives the Wilshire Crest a 97 out of 100, putting it in the top 2% of walk-accessible locations in the city of Los Angeles.

Transit here is very good. I stayed without a car with no problem. Wilshire Boulevard has very frequent bus service west to Beverly Hills, Westwood (UCLA) and Santa Monica, and east to Koreatown and Downtown LA. Wilshire & Fairfax, about a 5 minute walk away, has a Rapid bus stop, and the Rapids move along quite nicely. Fairfax Ave. has good bus service north to the Fairfax commercial area (if you don't feel like walking) and Hollywood. There are also connections all along Fairfax to east-west bus routes like Beverly Blvd. Because the Wilshire Crest is very central to the visitor-oriented parts of LA, the travel times to these places are reasonable.

Was only there for one night. It was a nice place on a quiet side street just around the corner from the Israeli Consulate. I would describe the rooms as simple and roomy. The free breakfast was not much to speak of through. More like an Israel breakfast then a traditional continental breakfast that most people are used to in the USA.

Parking is on the street and it can be a bit of an issue on a busy night.

I just wanted to thank everyone at the Wilshire Crest Hotel in L.A. for making my first trip of many more, hopefully, a sweet, sweet experience. Mel and Aaron and everyone always greeted me with a smile, answered my many, many, MANY questions and got me extra things like salt to gargle a sore throat away, etc. etc. The hotel is central enough that I could walk to some places and cab to others without it being too cost prohibitive. It's not that no frills, as my room was spacious, had lots of place to do computer work, lounge and unpack ALL of my clothing. :o) Bonus mini fridge made storing food and supplements awesome. I try to be a health nut when possible, but even the lite breakfast of decadent desserts was too tempting to resist. I do appreciate all the fresh fruit, tea and OJ. I was actually sad to leave! This is definitely a hidden gem in the city. if you're not looking for extra frills like a pool or gym, you will really be glad you came here! There's nothing like unparalleled customer service when you're travelling.
Thanks everyone!!

Found the Wilshire Crest via my company's travel booking tool and it looked interesting - certainly different from the big places business travelers usually end up at. A scan of the web reviews were positive so I booked a room. The reviews were all dead on - this is a great boutique hotel. The room was spacious, the bed was firm, the water pressure was excellent and the entire facility was clean and quiet. I loved the little sidewalk patio out front and the manager Aaron was pleasant and gregarious. All in all well worth the low rate and I'd stay again without hesitation

We discovered the Wilshire Crest through TA reviews and stayed three nights in February, 2011. The location is in a very nice neighborhood and within a 10-15 minute walk to the L A County Museum, La Brea Tar Pits, the Peterson Classic Car Museum, Farmers Market (with great open air eating places – try the French Crepes Cafe) and a huge shopping mall with a Whole Foods Market and CVS near the mall. A block away from the Wilshire Crest is Wilshire Blvd with MacDonalds and a pretty good pizza place (turn right on Wilshire). Parking is free on the streets with a permit issued by the hotel. For a $125/night the price was reasonable. There is also a free computer station in the lobby. The staff was very courteous and helpful.

Our room was in the rear and quiet from outside traffic noise. The room (216) was larger than the average hotel room. There was a comfortable queen bed and a small round table with two chairs, a flat panel TV and a mini fridge. The bathroom has a toilet and bath/shower combo. The vanity is outside the bathroom which is completely open to the rest of the room so your roommate can see you brush your teeth etc. The bathroom had a large crack in the tile by the ceiling and there was some rust on the towel rack. The edges of the mirror were also deteriorating. The bathroom did not have hooks for hanging clothes although there was ample room for them. There doesn't seem to be any sound proofing in the walls. It's very easy to hear neighboring room activities. The plumbing is loud – when neighbors use water you hear it. Real keys are used to unlock the door. We had trouble with the lock as did another person. The key had to be jiggled in the lock several times to get the door open.

The lobby and breakfast area are pleasant and roomy. However, the continental breakfast itself is cramped in a small area and it's difficult to move around it when several people are present. It needs to be spread out more. The breakfast consisted of coffee, juice, cereals, bagels etc. Yogurt cups were present but the yogurt contained candy in it. There were a few apples and oranges and one day a dead banana. The coffee one morning was awful and we passed on it. The pastries looked old and not appetizing. It seemed like they were from boxed pastries found in markets.

In our opinion, with a little work, the Wilshire Crest could significantly improve its image. But then the price would go up of course. There are some pluses and minuses to this place so it just depends on your preferences.

Found this hotel through TripAdvisor.com and it didn't disappoint! We did a Birthday Star Search for a friend's birthday celebration. We stayed here for 5 nights -- and it was wonderful!! Friendly staff, nice (simple) breakfast included - and we could not have had a more convenient location for our visits to TV shows! We were close to everything we wanted to see! 99 cents store was right around the corner for picking up snacks and bottled water. Small refrigerator in the room which was extra nice. Room was very spacious and clean.

I would absolutely stay here again. The only slight issue we had was that the breaker blew when we dried our hair. But - as all these reviews say, the service was helpful and had us taken care of in no time (seriously, like 1-2 minutes).

If you are looking for a safe, clean, reasonably priced small hotel to stay in Los Angeles in an absolutely perfect location, I think you should definitely consider Wilshire Crest.
