“Like what they are doing - The Standard!”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

I stayed here recently when needing a location close to the Dodgers Stadium with my family.

We chose the Extra Large Room, which was of a reasonable size with the key feature peice being an extremely large bath in the guest room. My daughter and I enjoyed splashing around after the baseball.

Overall, I found the property to be very cool - trend focused, but at the same time with some fantastic concepts not to be found in most hotels. It's great when a brand has the license to mix things up a bit and essentially bring something quite unique into the market place. A great departure from your standard hum-drum hotels.

They have a very nice all day dining options with a courtyard outside. The food and beverage was of a high standard and my wife felt, reasonable in price for a property in the middle of LA. There is a Table Tennis Club, which is both a place to play as well as party. Loved the concept! They must have about 20 tables there as well as a couple of nice service bars, and some great photography on the wall of celebrities over the years playing Ping Pong. We had our seven year old with us, but we would have loved to try it out under different circumstances. The Biergarten up on the roof also presented as lot's of fun.

Staff overall were very pleasant and willing to please. Certainly satifsfied this hotelier's high expectations.

I would defintely return. I feel it would be a great destination for a group of friends in LA looking for something edgy and with great character, and the experience has cemented the brand in my my mind as something to look for when travelling around the country. Particularly with a point of difference.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 602 and liked it. A little road noise, but nothing extreme.

Bathtub smack in the middle of the room so you can trip over it when you get up in the middle of the night? Sinks low down so you have to bend to reach your makeup? Shower that fogs up the entire room? Housekeeping that leaves wrapping from toothbrushes? Earplugs provided free of charge (you know what that suggests). And the room with the toilet 45 square feet? And slow service getting coffee in the morning.

And what is with the sign for the hotel being places upside down?

Also, the bed is way too soft, is basically on the floor, and the platform is a hazard.

It tries too hard and makes no sense. Someone should tell the owners that hip can still be comfortable and sensible. Time to rethink this hotel. In the interim, I won't return.

We're sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy the hotel - we do supply images and descriptions of the rooms on our website to try and show guests the style of the rooms. The sign of the hotel being upside down is a design aspect with a lot of history and is something you will see throughout the brand. As a design hotel we know that our style isn't going to be for everything but we appreciate you booking and giving us a try!

I stayed at The Standard in Downtown while I was in town for business, assuming it was like the Standard hotels in NY. It is not. The hotel is a bit run down, and it feels like you're staying in a 60's motel. The rooms are big and spacious, but the bed is on the floor, and the shower is in the middle of the room. You can hear the music going into the night (from both the 3rd and 11th floors, both of which I stayed in). I would recommend getting a higher floor room so that you don't hear the noise of the street. The rooftop is nice, the pool is small and the chairs aren't very comfortable but the area gets alot of sun. There's also two other areas aside from the pool on the roof, the biergarten and a place with tables and chairs. There are some good restaurants in walking distance, but the food at the hotel wasn't very good. I think this would be a good place to stay if you're looking to go out and save money. Overall it's not very nice so I wouldn't recommend it as a luxe hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a high floor

We're sorry to hear that your stay with us wasn't to your liking. The design is minimalist and not to everyone's taste but we do offer images on our website for people to look at before booking. We have an excellent new Chef who is launching new menu's and Downtown Los Angeles has many award winning bars and restaurants nearby!

The rooms are fine and large(except the bed on the floor surrounded by a ledge)and the glass panel that allows you to watch your partner shower...wish id lost some weight first!
The windows are thin but we had a high floor. So when the party next door started at 3am we werent happy. To give the hotel their due,the security turned up quickly and eventually the police too and it was resolved.
This is a young persons party hotel...the rooftop bar is pricey and loud but you can swim in the pool (watched by all the clobbers) till late.
parking is $10 if you self park under the hotel...

This hotel tries soooo hard to be hip and happening. Perhaps that works for some people, but after a couple of nights all I wanted was something that works and makes sense. It may or may not be cool to have a platform bed about 6 inches off the floor, but why do the light switches have to be so hard to find? Why do I have to trip over the platform if I get up in the dark? Why are the windows so thin that I could hear street noise very early in the morning, even on an upper floor? Why was there a 4-foot long plastic sculpture of a giant foot that I had to walk around in the bathroom???

The rooftop bar gets a lot of business from non-hotel local residents. Perhaps that booming bass from the DJ creates a great vibe for the neighborhood, but we wanted a late night drink and had a hard time finding a quiet place to talk. But what really convinced me I don’t want to return here is this: on a hot day, after a number of meetings downtown, I wanted to have a swim in the pool before dinner, however I was told by an employee at the bar that it was closed for the entire day for cleaning “in order to be ready for the weekend.” Seriously? On a Wednesday, it takes you a FULL day to clean a small pool before your weekend???

It is a stretch to think of this as a full service hotel. There is a small bar and small restaurant on the ground level. The staff are generally pleasant and try to be helpful, but service for breakfast was slow. The front desk staff are also helpful and friendly, but didn’t seem terribly knowledgable when we asked, for example, for directions. On one occasion, I asked for change for a $20 bill in order to tip the car parking valet, and you would have thought I had asked for the keys to the bank vault.

Clearly, the hotel management is focusing heavily on selling this as some kind of hipster destination, and not focusing on service or guest comfort. There are many hotels in downtown LA. I wouldn’t go back here. It wasn’t bad, but it also doesn’t merit a return

Room Tip: This is tough, because rooms on a lower floor hear too much street noise, and rooms on the higher fl...

We're sorry to hear that your stay with us was less than satisfactory. Unfortunately our pool was out of service for 24 hours for cleaning and to ensure the chlorine levels were correct for the safety of our guests.
We do have a 24/7 restaurant, food and cocktails served in SPiN, bar food and drinks on the roof and also a Biergarten serving german cocktails, beer, wine and food.

An amazing contemporary Hotel. On check-in we were upgraded to a "Humongous" room which was a great gesture, as it was our first time in LA.
The room was literally humongous; the open plan bedroom and bathroom/wet room were extremely clean. We stayed for 5 nights over a weekend where the rooftop pool basically turns into a club.
I read comments about noise being an issue, and there are earplugs in the room but I never had an issue sleeping and the beds are ridiculously comfy. The Pillows are lush.
I'd check out the Spin club on the 2nd floor, where you cans drink and play table tennis naturally.
Defo stay here if you're doing the whole LA here to be seen trip. There's loads of models and wannabe Hipsters walking around. But if you can take all that with a pinch of salt, and do your own thing then you'll love this place!

The Standard in Downtown LA is a contemporary hotel on a good location. Every time you turn around there is a new surprise. Like the roof top pool and bar. Or the Ping Pong club. The room could have been more comfortable as getting out of a bed basically on the floor is tough. The other interesting thing is that the shower has glass that opens up into the rest of the room. No secrets in this room.

The free wireless Internet is a bit slow.
