The Standard Downtown
Ranked #111 of 355 Hotels in Los Angeles

First, they lost our luggage for an hour. Second, the rooms are trying to be minimalist swank, but more like clock work orange - bed on ground, table sized for midgets, bathroom no privacy with open glass & basically very few amenities. The hotel is loud, but it is known as a party hotel. But,

I've stayed here 2-3 times for business in the past few years and think it's good value for your money in downtown LA (rates generally $150-225 range mid-week). Lobby has a very trendy LA vibe. Rooms are decorated in a very minimalist/modern style - definitely different and not for everyone, but clean and have everything I needed for an overnight stay (nice bath products). Showers/bathrooms have a glass wall onto the room, so something to keep in mind depending on your roommate. Comfortable bed. Service is good - front desk and restaurant staff have always been very friendly.

Where do I start? This is the hotel from Hell. I'm still here - dazed from being awake ALL night... Deciding whether to go downstairs and go berserk.
I'll start with the mild stuff at the beginning...asked for a No Smoking room when booked, and were promptly given the keys to what can only be described as an ashtray. We were moved immediately to another room. So far, so good.
Tried to eat at the restaurant. Empty with a few kids sitting at the bar so waited to be seated. Nothing. Nobody. Barman looked away...so walked away after a few mins. It was raining outside so decided to try again. Still nothing at the welcome sign, so found our own table. Waited, waited..nothing. So found our own menus. The menu looks like it is entirely breakfast apart from a few limited lunch items. Server finally slouched over with attitude. We left.
So, Monday night we get to bed for a good night's sleep before our journey to Australia. At midnight music is thumping from the roof garden. I called Reception and was told it would go on til 1.30am.
At 1am it was turned up so I called down again & was told the staff often play it louder than allowed and he would check it out. No change until the highlight of our stay...at 2am we have 5 LAPD officers thumping our door demanding we open up and a drug crazed hooker screaming like she's being murdered. After my husband convinced them it wasn't me, but the room next door they spent the next 30mins outside our door with the crazy druggie.
Ahhhh... 2.30 & finally it's all over. Until EVERY person in the hotel decides to take a shower! Which sounds like it's in your own room! Then the roof party started again...Doof,Doof,Doof so loud our window was vibrating! I called down twice before they finally sent someone up to stop it. So then all we had to deal with was the showering until 4am. And then the crazy woman returning at 5am & thumping continually on the next door to get back in.
This place is a dive. It is basically a backpacker's hostel - old, tired & worn out. And no, we will NEVER consider a Standard ever again. My next move is the battle for a refund!
Stay here if you are under 20, love ping pong, meth & don't intend to sleep.
Wish me luck at check out!

The rooms were sort of funny as the other reviewers note but beds were comfortable and room was clean and had everything you need.
The pool parties are a blast! Coming from Vancouver we don't have this la pool party scene.
The party starts early afternoon and goes late night. Lots of fun. Lots of drinking. Lots of characters.

Spent 3 nights here at the end of December. Was upgraded to a larger room upon arrival. Room was very spacious and clean. Enjoyed the large soaking tub in the bathroom. Overall, the room was spacious and comfortable. However, a selection of firmer pillows would've been nice.

Front Desk agents were very friendly throughout the stay. I had to call to complain about a party next to my room one evening and the evening manager handled it well.

Ate breakfast twice at the downstairs restaurant. Was impressed with the menu and food. Definitely a nice way to start the morning.

While the downtown location is just moderate - the area still has a ways to go to become desirable, i would stay here again.

I recently stayed here for 4 nights and thoroughly enjoyed my stay. Fantastic location, 10/15 minute walk from the Staples Center / LA Live and a 5 minute walk to 7th Street / Metro Center station. Downtown LA can pretty much be explored on foot. My room on the 5th floor was spotlessly clean on arrival and everyday thereafter. The bed and pillows were extremely comfortable. Some vehicle noise (buses) was audible from Flower Street below. I didn't try out the rooftop swimming pool or 24 hour gym so cannot comment, however the rooftop bar was cool and had some great views of Downtown LA. The staff were also friendly and accommodating.

not sure what room type i had, but i was in room 910

pros:
- high ceilings, massive room
- kinda liked the buzzy atmosphere (though it was clearly a tourist / unfamiliar crowd)
- good price
- great location if you need to be downtown (trip to airport was only 30-40 minutes in rush hour)
- host of shop & restaurants in the area

cons:
- place has seen better days ... comon areas look especially worn
- woudl have been really umcomfortable if i was there with my another person (even my significant other) b/c there was no door on the bathroom (nor shower curtain) and the wall was made of glass ... you even have to close the blinds to shower

overall a solid 4-star, but hotel needs upgrades, but i coudl overlook that given size of the room & price
