“Not impressed”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 3, 2014

We picked this hotel because we were told it was very conveniently located near Universal Studio's. That was the only nice thing about it. We arrived at this hotel at 8:00 pm. The outside entrance had 3 signs that said "Hilton, Tilt, Clarion?? It has an identity crisis. We weren't even sure if we were entering the hotel correctly, because the entrance looks like an exit from the parking area, unmarked and plain. The lobby looked nothing like the pictures and it was very dark and dim and furniture piled up everywhere. I had read in previous reviews that it was under construction, but that was from last August, couldn't believe it was still going on 7 months later. There was an attendant sitting behind a computer, couldn't even see him until I walked right up to the desk. Check in went OK. We were told that the whole second floor was completely closed and under construction, which was true, because the whole third floor (the only other floor) smelled of paint and drywall dust.

We then tried to venture out to the street to try to find a restaurant to grab something to eat. Right outside of the entrance to the hotel, there was an overturned shopping cart, with garbage piled all around it. There were two people running down the street and ducked behind a fence at the street corner and hid there, while watching back down the street. I grabbed my son and ran across the street and ran into the pizza restaurant right beside the Starbucks. It was pretty run down, but made great pizza. By this time the people across the street had ran off, so we ran back to the room.

The room itself was very dim and dark, but was clean. There was no room vault. The next morning, we made our way down to the lobby again to try and see if there was actually a complimentary continental breakfast and was surprised to see all the piled up furniture from the night before, were set up table and chairs for breakfast. They had a limited selection of food available, but it did the trick. I asked the attendant where the pool was (that was advertised on the website) and she told me the Health Department had closed it down?? I also asked her if they were actually a Hilton, Tilt or Clarion Hotel and she replied that they were transitioning over to a Tilt Hotel, but not officially yet. OK, I'm thinking Hilton, Tilt and Clarion wouldn't want to see ANY of their names attached to this place, but surprise, all three were!! So she gave us instructions how to walk over to Universal Studio's, which I was a little leary about, seeing as the area seemed to be very run down. In the light of day however, it didn't look that bad, it took us about 20 minutes. Overall, we were really disappointed in this place. Maybe once they are finished their reno's it will be a better experience. Staying somewhere else next time.

Photos do not accurately represent this hotel. They appear to be of the Clarion which with its current remodeling effort are transforming it into the Tilt Motel

The new look is not an improvement in our opinion but perhaps they are looking to attract a different clientele than families. Instead of a well lit lobby they have transformed it into a dark room complete with black lights and fluorescent mural of a woman on the wall and crystal looking light fixtures and disco like atmosphere. The lobby turns into the breakfast room using its velvet S-shaped couches as part of the seating.

Room was nice and clean. Long countertop for stuff. Small table and chair. Beds were comfortable. Bathroom had holes in shower curtain and a hair dryer with missing blades causing it to vibrate and make loud noises to the point we couldn't use it

Breakfast is marginal.scrambled eggs from powder mix suspected. They were horrible. Microwave bacon. One waffle maker for everyone to use. Limited seating inside. We retreated to outdoor area which was for smoking but with no one smoking, it was the best seat to eat. Starbucks came to rescue just across street

Parking limited. Exit tricky. Make sure you trigger signal loop on right side of driveway

Location ok. Spoons down street was walking distant and great food. Hwy 101 right at hotel exit and Universal Studios a few blocks away

My son and had just arrived from Las Vegas and it was late at night....Saturday after Valentine's day. Could not find a room and it was late at night. We stumbled upon this Gem and the owner was so kind to give us a room he said he normally holds for guest that may have a complaint about a room. We were so grateful and the room was great...hotel has that vintage Hollywood charm! Clean rooms, quite and close to everthing! Will definitly look them up again! Thanks for a great stay...

Room Tip: we had a room with two very comfy queen size beds!

We stayed here for three nights while in LA on vacation. The things we enjoyed were free parking (really nice in LA - everywhere you go, you pay for parking), free internet and free breakfast (just OK, but included in the room price which is nice). This hotel was convenient to CBS Studios in Studio City, Universal City and Hollywood. It was a perfect location for our itinerary. Staff members were friendly.

The biggest complaint I had was that our room was not serviced. We didn't really need it after the first night so we left the do not disturb sign out but we were gone all day on the following day and nobody ever came to service the room. I was really upset by this! And when I went to the desk, they didn't really do anything for us.

We were not on the street side so the noise from the street did not bother us at all. There is a Starbucks across the street which was really nice. The hotel is still working on remodeling which was in comments from last summer but it didn't really affect our stay. As other guests mentioned, the lobby was really small and I don't know what it would be like if the hotel was at capacity (I think they were working on the 2nd level and I don't know that anyone was staying there).

We checked out of the Sheraton to come stay at this Choice hotel location. Breakfast was great. Lobby was kinda small, didnt have one but the space was all the breakfast area. Room was much bigger than the Sheraton. Desk staff was friendly. I was happy to stay at a Choice hotel. Thanks staff

Room Tip: Choice actually beat Sheraton. wow who knew

We attended a funeral and this affordable hotel is two miles from the Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills.

It was our first time at a Clarion Inn. We booked one night in a 3 kings bed suite using the AAA rate. Two adjoining rooms and one bathroom.

The location is near a lot of tourist spots like Universal Studios. We made the short drive to Universal. We didn't bother walking it because we knew we'd be tired walking back to the hotel with three kids under age 11.

We checked in at 6pm. Many parking spots available at that time. The room was clean. Ample bath towels. The view was of the alley, but we didn't hear any freeway traffic noise. The room has a mini-fridge and microwave. The suite is roomy for 4 adults and 3 children. I would have liked another bathroom. If we stayed more than one night, I would have opt for the suite with 2 bathrooms.

Wifi worked well. The breakfast consisted of basic items like bagels, eggs, bread, muffins, yogurt, milk and fruit. It's enough to start the day.

I had only one issue. When we got in the room, the adjoining room was locked. We called the front desk twice. Both times we were told that a housekeeper will unlock the door. After an hour we got in the room, we located a housekeeper who then unlocked the other room. I didn't bother making a complaint, but looking back, I should have.

We'll likely return to this hotel since it's near Universal and more affordable than the hotels closest to Universal. Plus, the CI suites cost less than small standard rooms at the Hilton/Sheraton.

Had an event to attend at Universal Studios. Hotel is just outside of Universal Studios, so you are not paying the big bucks that you would be paying inside the park. Most of parking is under the hotel, it is an older hotel and they had some remodeling/renovations going on, but lobby was cute, staff was friendly, and room was clean & comfortable. It is so close to the freeway, but could not hear or smell it in the hotel. There is a traffic signal at exit, so very easy to get out, close to Universal Studios, and breakfast included!
