The Miyako Hotel is an good hotel that is centrally located in Little Tokyo. Though the rooms are a bit old and in need of an update, They are large enough and clean enough to have a very comfortable stay. The inclusive Satellite Channels and Wi-Fi makes this a wonderful bargain. It is also walking distance to shops, restaurants and a couple of small supermarkets. About three blocks down is a train stop which can connect you to almost anywhere in the city. The staff is friendly, efficient and professional. The spa upstairs is very good and a great bargain.

Room Tip: Ask for a Room facing 1st street.

I had to make a short overnight trip to the Little Tokyo area of downtown Los Angeles and the Miyako Hotel was recommended to me. It's right on the edge of Little Tokyo on First Street. The area around the Hotel is a mixture of older buildings, the entrance to the Little Tokyo mall, Buddhist temples, parking lots and the Japanese American National Museum. Union Station is a bit of a walk away (four long blocks, better to take a taxi) and the Metro station is about a block and half away.

Check in was very quick and easy. Check in time is 3:00. We were couple of hours early, but we were able to check in as our room was ready. The room was a good size, with two double beds with white linens and adequate room to walk around the room. There was a closet just inside the door and a small refrigerator and coffeemaker just past the closet. There was a flat panel TV with DirectTV. The bathroom was relatively large with marble countertop and a tub/shower combination. The toilet had a bidet attachment. The air conditioning worked well and, while you could tell it was on, it was on obtrusive. I didn't notice any street noise even though the room was on the First Street side. I only noticed a little noise from the adjacent rooms; some very faint muffled voices and a bump or two.

There free WiFi and a small computer station with 2 PCs and a printer. There is small snack bar, which serves the complimentary continental breakfast, just off the lobby. The continental breakfast was really nothing special: a couple of small lukewarm croissants, yogurt, juice and coffee or tea. There is a Japanese restaurant on the second floor (I did not eat there during my stay). There is a great variety of restaurants within a couple of blocks of the Hotel. The Hotel also has a spa where you can get a massage on the third floor.

There is a bellhop/concierge with whom you can store your bags before check in or if you've checked out but are still haven't left town.

The Hotel doesn't have all the amenities that a larger chain hotel might have, like a bar, a lounge with big screen TV or a separate business center, that you might want on a longer stay, but all in all, it was a pleasant stay for the one night I was in town. Everyone on staff was pleasant and easy to deal with.

We stayed in the Miyako in December 2013, it was a fantastic little hotel in a Little Tokyo. It's exactly the kind of place you want in a cheap and cheerful hotel. Spacious clean rooms comfortable beds (light blocking curtains) and a large bathroom with bath. But it is the little things that make the Myako special - the soaps are paraben and cruelty free. Also there are great little restaurants all within a couple of blocks (the Laughing Ox was particularly delicious).

I stayed at the Miyako for two nights in mid December with a college gal pal of mine. We both found it quite good...and right in the downtown area we wanted to be in. I had had a few studios downtown in the '80's and I wanted to visit the area after 30 years. Little Tokyo was pretty much the same, and the rest of the surrounding area was certainly more gentrified...which I enjoyed thoroughly. The Miyako is a great home base for trips to visit all the great downtown museums and theatres. We had a fabulous time The room was well appointed, clean, had a fun street side view, scanning to the mountains in the distance. The parking downstairs was easy, The lobby snack shack was adequate for a quick bite, but there were lots of yummy ( mostly sushi) places to eat all within walking distance. My friend and I both thought the Miyako worthy of a recommendation and I'd gladly stay there again if ever in Downtown LA.

We continue to stay at the Miyako when in downtown Los Angeles partly because it's close to Union Station, but also because it's pleasant and homey, with polite and helpful staff. This is an older property, but well maintained and exceptionally clean. Our room on the executive floor had newer linens and bedding, and the carpet, drapes, and lighting were in excellent condition. We also appreciate the expanded HDTV choices. Take 5 Cafe in the lobby continues to be a good place for a light breakfast or snack. The hotel is adjacent to the interesting shops and restaurants of Little Tokyo. Try the barbecue at Korean Kitchen, a busy and popular place for lunch, and a great value.

Room Tip: Rooms on the executive (top) floor have great views and updated furnishings.

The hotel's situated in Little Tokyo area of city. There are good 'value' eating choices around. The hotel's close to the train and bus stations. It's an 'extended' walking distance away from older and historic part of city and original Spanish/Mexican area of city - but that's not unmanageable. Little Tokyo Village around is worth spending time in - its bustling with activity

A great find! Atmosphere and charm. It's so nice to find a place that isn't part of a huge homogenized chain. Miyako has personality.

Rode the Super Shuttle from LAX. Trip took a little under an hour. Room was fine, but not flashy or opulent. Superior breakfast buffet. The Little Tokyo neighborhood is fun to explore on foot.

The bellman Jesus helped me locate an excellent spot for a sushi and sashimi lunch: Sushi Gen. Walking distance. I strolled around and looked at temples. It was Monday, so the museum was closed.

Desk staff welcoming and courteous. I had trouble getting the TV to work, and someone came right up and got it sorted out. It wasn't broken, I was just pushing the wrong buttons.

They have a spa, but I found a small, legitimate mom and pop massage place in the Honda Shopping Center that gave me a good shiatsu treatment for about half the cost. (Info on request.)

I only stayed one night, and look forward to returning for a longer period of time. The really beat staying at one of those grim airport hotels where I usually hole up. Taking this option made Los Angeles memorable in its own right and not just a place to change planes.

A tip of the hat to the TA members who suggested it.
