Beach and bike path great. I am sure the views are great if you can get a day that isn't cloudy/foggy - it can be bright blue sky and hot sun 1 mile inland but chilly and grey on the bay. The pier was disappointing/on the verge of tacky with fast food joints round every corner. The street entertainment and stalls were not as good as Venice boardwalk. Third Street shopping was nothing special. We thought the whole place would be a little more refined than it actually was.

We visited Santa Monica Pier one evening in late May when we were in LA for 2 days. After the glitzy glam of Hollywood Walk of Fame, Beverly hills, and Rodeo drive, this was a perfect serene place to spend the evening.
Parking was convenient to find. We spent our time walking up and down the beach, then explored the pier which has a Ferris wheel and roller coaster right on the pier and is beautiful in the evening.
Loved the place!! There were street performers, and singers who were actually quiet good. Caught a beautiful sunset and then headed to the 3rd street and had a very memorable Mexican meal at Mercado's. Will definitely be back and this time will surely get on the roller coaster. :)

We enjoyed at day in Santa Monica and spend most of our time walking the beach, the pier was good but not great, we had a nice meal in a Mexican restaurant at the sea end. However I wished afterwards we had chosen to explore a different area with a bit more to do. The sea front shops were cool and the street performances made it interesting but all in all I have been to better.

We loved Santa Monica, we have never done the West coast, and it was our first time seeing the Pacific Ocean, and it was well worth the trip. Santa Monica was clean and the people seemed nice, we walked along the beach I had a paddle, it was 4.00pm and the sea was still warm, no litter and the sea was clear. we walked along the pier, had a coffee and watched the world go by this place did not disappoint. we parked the car on the beach front car park about £6.00 for the days parking great value.

We stopped by when taking a week long visit to the Malibu and LA area. The parking situation is good as there is a large lot right on the beach and there is copious room along the large beach expanse as well.

With regard to the pier, our experience as out of towners was "ok". It was busy and there were some shops and places to eat, though nothing that really held our interest. We eventually walked to the Third Street Promenade, which is only a short distance away.

Overall the combination of great parking, easy beach access, the pier and access to Santa Monica make this a nice attraction. That being said we enjoyed the pier, harbor and restaurant experience in Santa Barbara a great deal more than this one.
