“Tiny but Perfect!”
Reviewed May 20, 2013

My husband and I drove from Amarillo, TX to Los Angeles, CA in one day last week. After hours of searching for an inexpensive, but nice hotel...we happened upon the website for the Rose Bowl Motel in Pasadena. When we arrived, staff greeted us by name, checked us in immediately and offered to help us unload our car. Although the hotel is obscurely located, it is perfect for an overnight stay where all you really need is a good night's sleep! Our room was small, but impeccably clean and offered everything we needed. Not luxury...but quiet, quaint and safe!

Room Tip: Only 14 rooms if I remember right...but it was very quiet!

We traveled to Pasadena for the Rose Bowl Parade and most of the major chains were already sold out. We found this motel which was also located on Colorado Blvd but discovered it's not in the main area. It's in the next town over of Eagle Rock. That was more my fault for not consulting more maps but It wasn't clear to me that it wasn't in the Old Town Pasadena area. We finally get there (it's only about 2 miles away) and the outside is neat as a pin and the staff very nice. The rooms however, are just okay. It was clean and the bed comfortable, but other than that, you wouldn't want to hang out there. The area where the closet would be, had a unit placed inside for a fridge and microwave and there was no dresser. We had to just keep everything in our suit cases. The bathroom was very small with a stall type shower. There is a Trader Joe's across the street so I figured the area couldn't be too bad but I felt a little isolated. There was no room phone and I couldn't get any cell service (except emergency calls) in my room. The TV reception wasn't great and I found some hardcore porn on one channel. Just an FYI if you have children with you. I don't think they saw it, but I kept my hand on the remote. The free breakfast was minimal but a cup of coffee and a danish is fine. They had bagels one day, cereal one day, etc. The management is what really shines here and I think they try really hard. If they updated the rooms, I think they could have a great place on their hands.

Room Tip: This is an old fashioned motel with all doors facing the parking lot and the parking spaces in front...

ok, how anyone in their right mind could rate this motel "excellent" is beyond me. Here are the basics. The room is a 10x10 box with about 2 feet on each side of the bed. Furnishings are very worn. Bathroom was clean but barely functional. Faucet stopped working twice in 3 days. Fixtures were in very poor condition. The Eagle Rock area is not terrible but it's no great shakes either. There is a car wash right behind (i mean RIGHT BEHIND) one side of the motel. The continental "breakfast" consists of weak coffee, powdered milk and a couple of containers of cereal. Find something else. This place has potential but never attains it.

Room Tip: there are no good choices

I stayed at the Rose Bowl Motel in Eagle Rock while my son was visiting Occidental College. It is a cute little place, neat as a pin, harkening back to the days of motor inns. It isn't exactly modern, but the bathroom shower was recently tiled. The 1 queen room was small, the bed was ok, but could use a few more pillows, but it was quiet at night. I don't think I have stayed in a cleaner motel; pride of ownership really shows. The family who owns this motel was constantly cleaning, sweeping, and gardening during my stay. They still use old-fashioned keys. Very limited breakfast, but there are so many great choices in Eagle Rock that I didn't use it. If you prefer cookie cutter chain motels, this may not be to your liking, but if you like to stay in places with a little more personality while supporting the small business owner, then give Rose Bowl Motel a try. I would definitely make this my motel of choice if my son decides to attend Occidental. I really liked Eagle Rock, also.

We went to L.A. for vacation and stayed 1 week in Rose Bowls.
The staff was totally friendly and the rooms quite clean. However, sometimes we felt that the towels were not 100% clean.
The breakfast was extremely small. We could get apple-, orange juice, as well as coffee, could choose between several small packages of kellogs cereals and some kinds of packed croissants. There was also no dining or breakfast room. It was just a table where all the mentioned items were placed. This means you had to take the breakfast to your own room to enjoy it comfortable.
Nevertheless, for the cheap price, we were surprised to get a breakfast after all. Concluding, for the price we payed it was more than ok.

They are trying to be a good hotel and it shows.

They updated the rooms (they might only have 6-12 of them) . They cleaned up the outside. They don't allow undesirables to check-in even though the price is within their reach.

However, it is still tainted with the low expectations or quality standards of its non-American owners. For example, you get the remote handed to you upon check in. The bed doesn't have a bottom fitted sheet. It has one top sheet and then the bed spread. No blanket. I don't touch the bedspreads- I toss them on the floor where they belong. So, all I had was a top sheet. The bed had just two small pillows although it was a king. Not so nice for a couple wanting to read or hang in the bed.

The a/c unit was a bit loud, but the outside sounds of the road prohibited us from keeping the window open at night.

The free breakfast was a bit of a joke. Tiny table with juice and milk in their cartons (as if they just picked them up from the store), a couple boxes of cereal (so that we don't steal/take more than we can eat?), and a couple very manufactured looking flat sweet rolls in plastic packaging. .

Wifi worked fine. No table/desk in the room because it is so small. Shower was awesome because they apparently have not yet heard of water saving showerheads.

With criticisms aside, I rate based upon how it met my expectations, and for a $57 room in L.A. on a Saturday night it was a very good deal. The guy working there was nice. Nothing too negative. Felt clean enough. Cute looking from the outside. Etc.

If this hotel was $100 property with a corporate name it would have gotten a terrible rating and a call to corporate, so keep in mind that this review is in relation to price/expectation. For a cheap nights stay with no frills and not too many disappointments, this is an awesome choice.

As an alternative you might want to look into the Crystal Inn with its much more spacious rooms for just about the same price.

Room Tip: Look at your options first.
