this was a breath of fresh air and culture among the busy, busy streets and highways of Los Angeles. The views up there were breathtaking and reminded us of Amalfi, Italy. Nice lunch offerings that were healthful and not too pricey for a large city museum.

J Paul Getty collected a huge amount of art - this museum makes it available for anyone to go and see (for free although you do have to pay for parking if you drive there)
The museum itself is beautiful and in the most wonderful grounds. As with any large collection of art there's bound to be stuff you don't like but I'm sure everyone will find many things to adore.
Allow at least a half day to visit - there's a lot to see! Take a picnic if you want to just sit outside and soak up the surroundings.

Getty museum is a must-see attraction for anyone visiting L.A. In fact, if you are scrambling to entertain visiting family/friends, then add this to the list of places to go. Great views, amazing architecture, solid collection of permanent and temporary exhibits, and an unprecedented location make it a great place to wile the hours. They also have a nice-looking cafe with beer and wine. Although parking is a bit steep, it's a pretty cheap way to entertain a group.

This place is amazing! From the parking area ($15), you take a tram up the side of a hill, getting great views of LA. The tram ends on the museum grounds. From there you can choose from several buildings or to stay outside and look around the gardens. The architecture is very modern, and has a different view every few steps. The sleek lines of the buildings make a stunning contrast with the sky and greenery.
There is artwork of all types of mediums. At the time of my visit, there was everything from renaissance writings to modern photographic work. If I had to pick my favorite, I think it would be Van Gogh's Irises.
The restaurant, which is highly rated, requires reservations. It sits high on the hill for amazing views. There is also a cafeteria, and some outdoor booths with tables are located in the center of the complex if you prefer. Small group picnics and focused tours are available as well.

The best museum I found so far on the west coast of North America. I was impressed by the big collection of old paintings outside Europe. Worth seeing!
