Do yourself a favor and just go - sure, it appeals to the musuem and amateur photographer crowd, but the rotating art exhibits, beautiful architecture, and charming nooks and crannies that invite you to explore will slowly pull you in whether you like it or not.
My girlfriend and I took a trip here while visiting Santa Monica -- first time for her, second time for me -- and we had a great time. They were featuring some renaissance period pieces and sculptures, ancient scriptures and illuminations, and other artifacts from the 16 and 1700's that were unbelievably presented; At some points, it almost felt like we were transported back to the Victorian era, with well designed exhibits featuring authentic tapestries, furniture, and other knick knacks.
We brought some snacks from the S.M. Farmer's market, found a spot on the grass inside the Getty, and took a little break to rest our feet (everyone else is doing it, and it gives you a chance to soak in the surrounding garden and views).
I've already said too much, just check this place out, bring a camera, and let yourself get lost. Then you'll understand.
