Coral Sands Motel
Ranked #58 of 355 Hotels in Los Angeles
Reviewed March 11, 2013

I stayed here for 4 nights in the middle of December. Some pros and cons...

Pros:
~The guy working the front desk was incredibly kind and helpful. He pulled out a map of the area and gave me travel tips/advice.
~The hotel is right up the road from the metro. If you don't have a car, this is probably your best choice of Los Angeles hotel. I went EVERYWHERE using the metro system - from downtown L.A to Pasadena. This hotel is one metro stop away from Hollywood and Highland, so you can shop and explore the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The only thing is, if you're going downtown like I did, the metro ride is quite long. Be prepared for that.
~I loved the outdoor pool area with the twinkling fairy lights and palm trees everywhere. It was really lovely.
~Cute little laundry area with travel brochures and vending machines.
~Everything was clean enough.
~It has WiFi and I never really had a problem with it running too slowly or anything.

Cons:
~I didn't really like this area. It didn't feel very safe, particularly at night, with homeless people and shady characters wandering around (just being honest). To walk back to the hotel from the metro, you have to pass this little shopping complex that has a grocery store (Ralph's, I think it was) and it felt a lot like walking through a dark alley. I didn't like that part.
~The room was shockingly small. The pictures aren't very representative of just how small the room is. The bathroom was tiny, as well.
~I think there was some kind of construction going on next door, but there was lots of pounding throughout the day.
~No breakfast, so if you're a free breakfast kind of person, that's out.
~I couldn't figure out how to turn on the TV. Turns out the light switch has to be on. He said it had something to do with the age of the building.
~It all felt kind of run-down.
~Cell reception is not great.

Basically, I'd recommend this hotel to someone who just wants a place to sleep and maybe a place to swim, and who isn't renting/bring a car. If you're someone who likes luxury, don't stay here. My mom is a luxury hotel kind of girl and she didn't like this hotel. I'm an in-between kind of girl, and I thought it was average. I definitely would've liked more space and to feel safer.

Stayed 4 nights at Coral Sands and have not regretted my decision. Great location, accessible via metro. Hollywood/Western metro station is only a stone's throw away and the supermarket (including the great Chinese restaurant) add to the convenience. Room was clean and well kept, and the staffs were friendly.

Some additional travel/accommodation tips:
- Take the free LAX shuttle to connect to metro
- Metro ride to the motel costs only USD1.50, and takes around 1.5hrs.
- Keep your baggage light... motel is equipped with washing machines and dryers and each wash costs only USD2.
- Try ask for a room at the back away from the pool and jacuzzi... my last night was a nightmare with some rowdy youngers having noisy hot-tub party right into the wee hours.

Cheers!

The owners could make this far more attractive with just a few changes. Clean and paint the exterior (coral???). Right now it is painted baby poop yellow. Clean up the sidewalk area in the courtyard along the pool and jacuzzi.
My room was very clean. Nicely decorated. Bed was comfortable. Bathroom was small but adequate. My friend's room smelled bad. Saw a complaint in another review about tired linens; mine were clean and fine.

Room Tip: DOn't get a room opposite the pool and jacuzzi. Though close at 10 PM, noisy.

I stayed 4 nights at coral sands. It might not look very nice from the street, but it's more than ok on the inside. The guys at the reception were very nice and helpful, they even showed us to our room. They also have a room with a pc, microwave, washer/dryer and detergent is for free! The room itself is a bit outdated, but there was a fridge, flat screen tv and, what was even more important, a safe. The location is completely ok as well, there is subway station just on the corner, grocery store next door as well as starbuck's. It took us 25 min to walk to chinese theatre, which is fine with me. The only thing they could have improved is the amount of tv channels. They didn't have a lot of them. Other than that i would stay here again and i find it perfect for budget travelers. Don't really understand bad reviews here, cause on my way through CA i have seen worse motels which cost much more!!! If you expect it to be Beverly Willshire, then you are definitely wrong, but you are not paying 400 $ a night as well!!! I also felt myself safe at the motel, since everyone has to go through the reception. If you book in advance, ask for the room on the 1st floor, then you won't hear your upstairs neighbours :-)

From the lobby to our room dirty and disgusting appearance. The bed had very very outdated and worn linens that did not look clean. When I pulled back the sheets I found a heavily stained mattress. The stained looked like old blood or human excrement. The room furniture was very old worn scratched and dusty. I posted pictures on Yelp so you can see for yourself! Never stay here unless you want to feel like your in a nightmare from hell.

I was pleasantly surprised! For the price, this is a great motel just a couple of miles from the Hollywood Walk of Fame as well as really close to the 101. We used this as a base to visit Universal Studios and other Hollywood attractions and it worked out just perfect. There is a Starbucks just next doors and a CVS a couple of blocks away. The front desk was very helpful and walked us to our room. While the motel doesn’t look so appealing from outside, the room itself was very clean and comfortable. Room service obviously did a good job each day. For the price, this is a great deal.

Located next to a Ralphs and very good Thai restaurants. The staff, Pablo and Brian, were very helpfull and had the best attitude, rare in this part of the world. Close to the 101 and 5 mins from Universal Studios.
