“A fun and very different experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 22, 2013

The restaurant is located way into downtown LA on Industrial Street. It is in a very old building with a lost of character and is surrounded by a couple of bars, one with food as well, a liquid store and a grocery store just being build near by. There is valet parking.
It really feels like you are on the back streets of New York City; it has a lot of charm and the food is better than good.
I have only been once but keep thinking about it and cannot wait to go back!

“Good experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 14, 2013

We had lunch mid week without reservation. Available tables inside and out. Large wine and beer selection. Very nice menu, portion size was appropriate, not too large. Prices a bit on the high side, this is good for an occasional lunch for me, too expensive for several times per week. Lunch with one drink, tax and tip $20-30. Parking was no problem, we got a spot on the street just up from the door, there is also a public lot across the street for a low fee. Service was just right, food served promptly. Fries were especially good. Overall an excellent special occasion lunch.

“Delicious main courses”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 4, 2013

Church and State is a French restaurant set in an old warehouse on Industrial Street in downtown LA. And the area certainly feels industrial. And in the middle of nowhere. But from the look of the apartment blocks on either side of the road its an oasis of money.

There were three of us eating - and we all loved our main courses, including a Frenchman, which has to say something to the quality of the food. My chicken was really tasty. The profiteroles for dessert, however, weren't good.

Oh and even though the restaurant was only two thirds full it was very noisy - the acoustics were not good. Not ideal with jetlag.

“love the decor!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 26, 2013 credit card Amex Card Member Review

Old warehouse type decor combined with modern touches and great food. Bread is awesome. Steak frites are pretty good as well. Loved the dessert: had the chocolate pie with the caramel sauce on the side (it does not need it!!). Business or pleasure it is a great place to have "Soho" type lunch.

“Cool Restaurant in a Cool District”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 15, 2013

L.A. is not N.Y., as far as French restaurants are concerned. Church & State does not advertise his French cuisine, but it's the real thing, with a creative touch in a nice decor. Those not familair with downtown L.A. might be surprised by the district.
Check out the pile of baguettes in the back of the restaurant; it's like a piece of art!
