I was invited to the LAAC in March by a friend who was hosting her 25th Birthday party there. When I first heard we were going to, "The Los Angeles Athletic Club” I have to admit I was a little confused. I thought to myself why we would go to a workout athletic club for a party? I didn’t ask many questions since the girl hosting the party is the most popular person I know in LA and I just went with it. I later found out the LAAC was not only a gym but also a hotel, bar, lounge, restaurant, and a venue for many weddings, parties, social gatherings the list goes on and on. When my buddies and I got to the LAAC we took our own little tour and saw they had Squash and raquet-ball courts which was heaven! Come to find out the club has been around for about 150 years and has a lot of history. I found myself wishing I would have gotten a hotel room just to check out the place a little more. I eventually made my way down to the party which was a blast! The hotel staff was very friendly towards our group and I am thinking about looking into becoming a member since I am in the downtown area all the time. I did a little research and to become an actual member of the club is a good way to meet great people living in LA and seems to be high class. Great place overall!

I recently had my birthday party at The Los Angeles Athletic Club in downtown LA. I reserved the bar called Dukes which is located on the 2nd floor of the club. Dukes was the perfect size and it was pretty cool too! I would describe it as an upscale sports bar with a Cheers feel! It was perfect for my group of friends. About 150 of my friends showed up to the party and most of us reserved hotel rooms and made a whole night of it. The hotel staff did a great job of preparing Dukes for my party and they were very accommodating during our stay. The club as a whole had a real authentic and luxurious feel to it. We were all very impressed with the newly renovated hotel rooms and the party was a hit! The following morning my friends and I enjoyed the complimentary breakfast and used the clubs workout and spa facilities. If I didn’t live so far from the club I would definitely want to join and become a member. I would recommend The Los Angeles Athletic Club to anyone who is looking to throw a party, join a gym, or stay in a hotel. This place is awesome!!

Room tip: Just Call- Staff is very friendly and helpful

The slick web site fooled me. This is a relaxed environment in which to stay. If you need everything sparkling new you may be disappointed, but I loved it. Great breakfast, good location, great workout facilities, and friendly staff. I left some things there and they shot them to me as soon as I called. I recommend it.

My husband booked this hotel for a night away from the baby based on its seeming perks: close to restaurants, a fitness center and pool. I arrived at 3pm check-in with the idea that I'd work out, swim and enjoy the pool while my husband would meet with me later.

Be warned: MAJORITY of the rooms are ADJOINING.
Immediately upon entering my room, I was disturbed by the blaring of the neighbors tv. I phoned the front desk requesting a non adjoining room. I was assured no one was in the next door room. Yet, immediately after I got off the phone, I could hear the phone ringing next door. Why call if no one is there? I intercepted the worker who went into the room to turn off the tv, and he said my neighbor was 'out' and had left the tv on. I again requested of the front desk I would prefer a non-adjoining room. After a 15 minute wait, the staff member showed me to another room...only this one had a queen bed and btw, was still ADJOINING. So instead of accommodating my request, I was put in the same type of room with a smaller bed – I don’t get it. After waiting 20 minutes for the worker to return with the second room key (he had taken my orig keys, and not given me the second room keys), I carried my luggage all the way down back to the front desk, and asked to speak the manager (Alberto.) He waved me over and proceded to tell me their rooms were ‘mostly’ adjoining. I mentioned again that I would like a non-adjoining bed with a KING bed not queen – which is what we had paid for... I was firm but polite. HE asked me if I had trouble sleeping or was a light sleeper? Actually, when I choose a hotel, I prefer NOT to hear the goings-on of my fellow hotel guests. I don't think I'm alone in this preference.

He left me standing there for another 10 minutes without talking to me or telling me he was trying to accommodate me. After clearing my throat several times to get noticed, I finally managed to get his attention. He begrudgingly said he could put me in another room, but that it would need cleaning. And I would have to wait for another 35 minutes. Fine. I didn't care at this point. Just a clean room, with a king size bed where I can't hear my neighbors phone ring.

After I mentioned I would go to the gym, and come back for a key for my husband Alberto asked "Where is your husband, anyway." ??? The implication and tone was that I was 1) inept, 2) a woman and 3) not worth dealing with. I was embarrassed and ashamed, and I have rarely felt more discriminated against and invalidated than in that moment. Now, to be fair, I have a different last name then my husband - so maybe he thought I was an escort or having an affair? By this point, it's 4:50, I'm in street clothes in the lobby, and the gym and pool close at 5:30! On a Saturday! So, if you are going for a swim or workout, be forewarned. For a club based around fitness, they have terrible weekend hours – hotels.com stated that there is no room service on weekends, but not the early gym closures. My husband managed to speak to the GM, who apologized for the mishaps, put us in a suite, and sent us a bottle of champagne, but I can't help but feel that the GM is responsible for the lack of skill and customer service of the staff.

I would not pay to stay here again. The lobby and elevators were worn and dirty. The rooms themselves were clean, but in all three rooms I saw, mildew and mold were evident on the ceiling tiles in the bathrooms. I have also never seen a pool in more need of a re-grouting. The LA public pools are better maintained than Los Angeles Athletic Club. Save your money, go elsewhere for a quiet, restful experience. Or a swim in a clean pool.

Dear travelinfromla,

I would like to again extend our sincere apologies for the inconveniences and substandard service that you received while finding you an appropriate room that met your standards.

It is unfortunate that the first rooms we checked you in to were adjoining rooms. The majority of our rooms are not adjoining, and I’m sorry that you were given incorrect information by our staff. We have already started to address your comments regarding our weekend athletic hours not being posted and we will be updating this information on all third party booking sites to properly reflect this information.

Again, thank you for your comments about your stay with us. We will use this information as a tool to continue to improve our service, as we strive to exceed the expectations of all of our guests. I sincerely hope that you enjoyed your stay in the suite and we would appreciate an opportunity to have you as our guest in the future.

I am traveling on a holiday across the US and we choose this hotel due to its price, decor and good reputation on trip advisor. We were not disappointed and were very impressed with the choice. The service provided by the front desk was warm and felt like they genuinely cared instead of a man/woman in a sharp suit but with an arrogant and blase attitude. The front desk were helpful in providing directions and both check in and check out was efficient. I might just add that we were also upgraded to a king size bed for no cost or apparent reason at check in other than the fact that we got off a 15 hour flight and looked probably like we had no sleep. A plate of welcome fruit was also provided. In terms of the room, if you are a fan of the more classical looking decors, this one would suit you fine. The photos on websites/trip advisor does it total justice. The complimentary gym is great and as good as any commercial gym (well it is a commercial gym) and the complimentary breakfast was good enough given it was free. Also, free Wall street Journal for those who care. Only con's - could provide more toiletries as we were running low but they weren't replaced. For those who are particular - the bathroom does show a few signs of aging but more than usable for my standards. Overall, this hotel felt like it wasn't big enough to be arrogant and cared about its customers, provided the amenities we needed, great service, great price, great location if downtown is where you want to be and one of the few hotels that i have visited globally that I'd say had true historical character. Well done guys! ps - girlfriend wanted me to add in that its proximity to transportation both Pershing Square and 7th Street Metro makes travel to other parts of LA (including Disneyland) effortless
