USA Hostels Hollywood

On my travels, I've learned one thing about hostels: they're a mixed bag. Either they're wonderful or horrible. Unfortunately, USA Hostels is in the latter category. The only reason I didn't pack up and leave after the first two nights was because I was paid up for my entire stay, and they didn't offer refunds.

The room was dingy. There were no ladders to the upper bunks, so I had to literally scale the frame to reach my bed. People disregarded the no-smoking rule in the room and nothing was done about it.

One day I returned to my room to discover that my bed had been stripped and all my belongings had been flung carelessly onto a bench in the hallway. They hang receipts on the side of the bunk that are supposed to tell the staff which beds are taken. My receipt was right there, but apparently nobody bothered to read it. There was never an explanation or apology for this.

A few members of the staff were friendly, but most of them were cold and indifferent.

I would not recommend this hostel to anyone.

I guess this place is OK if you're a very laid-back backpacker. It's a good price in a good location, and there seemed to be a lot of interesting activities organised and fun people hanging around.
We booked a private room, which was huge and carpeted - nice. However, the toilet in the attached bathroom was blocked when we arrived, and it took two tries to get someone to fix it. The staff seem to vary from cheerful/helpful to blank/couldn't-care-less, and unfortunately we encountered the latter first. Another example - someone else came to ask about a room when we were at the reception, and they were told to wait around for 15 minutes because the staff couldn't process anything related to reservations during a shift change - sigh.
The cooking area is cramped and a little unsavoury, at least after the spotless HI Hostels I usually stay in. Btw, in case you were wondering, the all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast is cook-your-own.
The reason I would never stay here again is that security was awful. Our ground-floor room had flimsy windows with no locks (just slide 'em open from the outside), and just as I'd got out of the shower at 7am, a guy used a key to enter our room without knocking. I have no idea if it was one of the staff, but either way, there's no excuse.

Didn't start off so well here as the staff indicated a friend and I would be together in a 6 room dorm and when we arrived they told us we had been put in separate dorms and couldn't change it! The majority of the staff weren't very helpful or friendly.
The rooms are clean which was a bonus. There's good events like theme nights, comedy nights and bbq, which were good. The people staying there were great shame about the staff though.
The area is kind of dodgy, but there were two of us both female and we were never hassled in the three days we were there. Good location in terms of transport etc...
Despite the staff my friend and I had an okay stay there, after all we were only there to sleep. I would check out other hostels such as the Orbit before deciding to stay here though.

Have Stayed here a few times had a ball each time Staff were great expicaly the aussie ones Kate, Kate and Shane.

They helped organise all my tours and always asked me if i wanted to join them what ever they were doing (parting or just going to do some shoping) which was great as i was travling solo.

Back streets near there were allittle seedy but they told me to stick to hollywood blvd and it was all fine spent most of my time partying with the guys working there. Brenda saved me heaps from getting ripped off by the shuttle.

Cheap drinks and comedy nights rocked.

There is no reason to stay at this hostel, given there are other good ones. The location is seedy - as a single woman, I was approached on the street trying to get to Hollywood Blvd. I stayed one night, then went some where else. The Hollywood International hostel - which I've stayed at before - is a much, much better location - directly across from the Kodak theater - USA Hollywood is about 7 blocks down, more deserted, definitely worse area.

Room are clean and a good size, kitchen is good, no "main" room, just the bar upstairs. Staff is bunch of teeny-bopper rock star wannabes who will hang out with you.

If all you want to do is get drunk at the hostel lounge (cheap) and either pass out or throw up in your room, this is a good place. It does not have the usual tour information, etc., that you find in other hostels.

Another really nice hostel is the Orbit - they do a great job re hook-ups for tours with others in the hostel, free TV taping passes, etc. but their location - while very safe - does not have the Hollywood Blvd. night life.

The location of the USA Hostel Hollywood makes is very questionable . . . . not particularly safe to walk around at all. I made a run for it to get some food, and was approached several times.
