It is the chepeast hostel we found in Venice but it was very nice! The location is just perfect, literaly just on the beach and boardwalk. The rooms are very small but hostel is only for sleeping so it is enough. Bathrooms are clean and OK. There is WI-Fi in whole building. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Like a said the price and location is the biggest prons of this hostel. Recomended for everyone!

I had previously left a review of the same sun venice beach hostel which was a positive reflection of the new staff who were taking over this hostel. Unfortunately this review highlights bad practice, poor management and terrible customer service. We were using LA as a transit hub in between travelling central america and going to work in New Zealand. On our entry into LA we stayed at the SS and asked if we could store a bag while we travelled central america for 2mths as we didn't need all our stuff and were coming back to LA for a few days before flying to NZ. The manager agreed, a $40 storage fee was agreed and we were assured the bag would be safe. On returning to the hostel we found no bag and and a manager full of excuses that started apologetically, admitted responsibility and assured us that we would be compensated. After the manager had spent the afternoon agreeing how to word a disclaimer with higher management we were told 'its not our responsibility' and basically you cant do diddly squat. Its impossible to say it was theft from the staff but it would not surprise me at all.

I had no reply from higher management to an email which just proved further how this place treats its customers but my guess is that they will post a comment reply to this review with the 'same sun cant accept responsibility etc blah blah' to try to salvage a bad public image. If so please explain why you didn't have the decency to reply to a customer email about theft? ( im sure they will try )

My advice would be to stay away from this operation and stay at the YHA Santa Monica who are run like a professional outfit.

We stayed in Venice Beach Cotel a couple of times during our trip to the States. Location is great for Venice. The rooms were freezing in January, but otherwise alright (some better than others). We had mixed feelings about the staff. A couple of people were extremely nice and helpful but then again the rest of the staff (especially a few girls) were just horrible and rude. Like I said we came back a couple of times but we're never too thrilled about returning. It was just OK and a bit overprized...

Me and my girlfriend stayed here for 3 nights in January. Firstly it's hard to offer a balanced review as the hostel has just been taken over with new staff and management so any negative feedback is not a reflection on them but the operation they inherited.

Pro
Great location for Venice, yards from the beach and at the beginning of the boardwalk.
Helpful staff, good knowledge of local area and happy to help, they let us store a bag for 2mths ($25) while we travelled Central America.
All areas kept clean

Cons
Private room was very dated, broken light fittings. Cracked windows held shut with cello tape. Room was very cold in Jan, only heating was a prehistoric bar heater then dried the air out rapidly.
4 bed dorm on the other hand was unbearably hot, heater was loud.
Kitchen only had a 2 hob camping stove for the entire hostel to cook on... No cooker!. Therefore unable to cook at peak times.
Common area not suited to a social space, awkward and poorly laid out.
They don't recycle

Clearly the above will improve as the new staff seem motivated and competent although may take a few months.
I think they will potentially be a great outfit once the above is remedied but until then I wouldn't willingly stay there again.

Hope that helps and enjoy LA.

Josh

the staff ruined our trip to venice beach, the tall bald man was so rude and snooty he seems to hate people. the cotel was close to all the main spots but was way over priced. the bedrooms were small, wasn't much of a cooking facility there....venice beach at night is very dodgy be careful

Hello,

Thanks for your feedback, but we honestly do not have any tall bald men who work at the hostel. So I'm not sure who you are referring too. We are in the process of renovating the kitchen though, so we can definately improve that .

Cheers and hope you enjoy California.

One of the few budget places on the beach! Brilliant if you are exploring Venice Beach and Santa Monica.

I stayed in a 4 bed mixed dorm it was clean and comfortable and not too small.

Security is good - reception manned 24/7 and you have to prove you are a resident to get buzzed in.

Lots of activities for party goers every night.

By no means is this the worst place I have stayed however I would not be recommending this place. Yes the location is good, you're literally a few feet away from the main Venice Beach area, however at night I didn't feel particularly safe.

My friend and I had been traveling for a few months and this hostel was recommended earlier on in the trip by a guide who had taken us around Hollywood...clearly there was some commission for him when people followed his advice...

The room we had was ok in size, however the bathroom was terrible, the shower head fell off within minutes of us being there, the carpet felt gross, the mattress felt like nothing, the bed linen was a bit sketchy. Didn't feel like our stuff was pariculalrly safe either as the whole place wasn't really secure. On our last day we needed to leave our bags somewhere, we had been told our bags would be left somewhere secure....however this simply meant piling our stuff up with everyone else's stuff just behind the bar...there was no system to let them know who was coming and going and whether people had taken the right things. Luckily we had nothing stolen.

If I was to come back to LA I'd probably stay at a hostel in Santa Monica, which is a better area. I'd stayed in many hostels over the US that I would highly recommend however this place is not one of them.
