I went here at night, and the view was truly unbelievable. You can see the entire city of Los Angeles, a feat that is hard to accomplish almost anywhere else. And, even crazier- you can actually see stars from up on the hill! As for the Observatory itself, I saw a show in the planetarium which was very entertaining, and there are several good exhibits.

Spectacular views of the city, beautiful art deco architecture, interesting exhibits and best of all, this is where "Rebel Without A Cause" was filmed. If you are nostalgic over James Dean. Natalie Wood and/or Sal Mineo---you have to pay a visit on a sunny day.

Went to visit Griffith Observatory during a trip to Los Angeles. I found the night view of the city lights to be excellent. A good place to see the famous “Hollywood” sign. The visit is free of charge.

smog obscures views of city below; no smoking in entire park; free restrooms at top of hill; little cafe near entrance.
Good hiking trails.

So glad I decided to get out of the house and visit the observatory! So with complaining kids who wanted to stay at home and play video games we made our way to this California landmark. It was wonderful. The views of the city and the Hollywood sign were great. And all of this is free. They do have shows were you can learn about the galaxy. I would recommend spending the $3-$7 to see a show. It blew our minds away! It was so realistic! We felt as though we were in space! Just make sure you check the showtimes before you leave home. Parking can be challenging... Depends on the day and time you go. Parking lot was full so we had to park on the side of the winding road and make that uphill walk. There are no sidewalks. You walk along a small dirt path or in the street. Use caution. We stayed there for about 3 hours and saw one of the most beautiful sunsets and watched the city lights come on. Would have loved to stay a little longer but had make downhill walk before it got pitch black. No lights on hill. Once we got back to the car my kids actually thanked me and said they had a good time. This is a great to visit and don't forget your camera.
