First time in LA, 1st leg of our honeymooon (4 days in LA, 8 in Hawaii) and could not have had a better start.
Location - for us, was very convenient. It´s in the LA Live complex, a great spot for the night with restaurants and show centers (the Emmy awards were held here, 2 days after our departure). It´s a 15 min walk to the subway (which doesn´t seem to be used by tourists and locals as everybody moves by car...) from where you can access several interesting spots fast and cheap. LA Live has easy access to a major highway and its in the "financial district" (so to speak). Coming to this area at night is cool as you can see the skyscrapers (the tallest in LA) and all the lights The holtel and also its adjacent cousin - the Ritz - stand out at night due to the shape an lightning. To rent a car, forget the Hotel as an Avis office is nearby (5 min walk) and they´re keen on offering you a good deal - we got a Lincoln MKS premium sedan for the price of a compact car. There´s a public parking right in front of the hotel which is way cheapper and has all day parking. Tip - if you rent a car, a GPS is highly recommended!
Facilities - if you like modern, then you´ll like the hotel. It´s well decorated, the lobby, the bars and the LA Market restaurant (not tried but highly recommended from what we read and heard) are stylish. Good pool. As for the rooms, very spacious, good noise and light isolation. In-room free coffee, water and tea, replenished everyday. Ipod dock. Great bathroom, also spacious and with very good amenities. Very confy bed with several types of pillows to choose from. Do ask for a high-level floor to get a view
Service - we tried the room service for food and to asked for other things and they exceded our expectations. The concierge were allways helpfull and with good tips.
Food - as said, we asked for room service upon arrival. Very good but not cheap. But hey, it´s not a budget hotel. We also tried once the small "café" on the left of the lobby for breakfast and we liked it. Nearby (just ask at the hotel) there is a place called "The Original Pantry". It´s open 24-7 (really) and seems to be an institution around there. Serves typically american food and it´s breakfasts are famous (for a portuguese, it´s a bit of a shock to see what they eat for breakfast, no wonder americans tend to have heart conditions). It´s a cheap place and the portions are huge, good for sharing. Also close to the hotel, there is a cheap italian restaurant with oven-cooked pizzas. Breakfast is not included in the daily rate and like in several places in America, is terribly expensive so each day we went out to get it
What we did in LA? One day at the Universal Studios, another cruising along the sea, stopping at the beaches and ending the day in Santa Monica (beach, the famous pier, 3rd street promenade for stroling around, shopping and dinning). One entire day to drive in and around the city (Mullholland drive, Beverly Hills, Rodeo Drive, Sunset Blv, Farmer´s Market, etc etc) and exploring the hills were they have amazing houses. The last day to visit Hollywood Boulevard, the theatres, Walk Of Fame, etc.
All in all, great stay in LA made greater by the JW Mariott !!!!!
