We recently visited Universal Studios on our visit to Hollywood. My son had been wanting to visit a Universal park for YEARS! I had been to Orlando several times, but my kids had never been to one of the parks.
The crowds were light since this is the off-season. We did get the "Front of the Line" passes, which were great...although probably not terribly necessary since the wait for rides was much lighter this time of the year.
We rode all of the main attractions - Transformers, Jurassic Park, Mummy, Studio Tour, etc. and enjoyed all of them. However, there didn't seem to be much more to do there unless you wanted to go in/out of the various stores, shops, etc. We did enjoy seeing all of the characters walking around, and there was much more access to them for pictures than at other parks such as Disneyland.
Having been to Universal Orlando, there just seems to be more to do there. The studio tour is broken into multiple attractions in Orlando...which is more fun! There are more attractions and just seems like more to do.
The one thing that we really liked (and the have the same in Orlando) is the City Walk. It is a great area filled with all kinds of restaurants. If you do not want to have typical "theme park food", then I highly recommend visiting the City Walk.
Overall, we had fun, but it is very pricey for what it has to offer.
