Maltby's is close to home and our "second kitchen" when we are too tired to cook. We can count on good food and service in a relaxed atmosphere. It's always been a pub, but recent redecorating has contributed to the pub atmosphere (but it's still a good place for families with children). And it has charming sidewalk seating for dinner in summer and lunch on sunny days year-round. The owner is usually on the scene, working in the bar. I often has the chopped Greek salad, but on this week's trip, I had a delicious Cajun risotto and my husband had his favorite, fish and chips.

Food is always fresh and service friendly. Owner is very involved in the local community. Nice full bar to eat and watch the game. Specials are often terrific.

I love Maltby's and end up there more often than other places in town because the food is good, the prices are reasonable, the service staff remembers me and has been there quite a while. I often get the Chopped Greek Salad--light and refreshing--but also love the sandwiches and the Tavern Specials which feel like comfort food and home-cooked meals. The small bar is a bit of a local watering hole and it has serves Guinness and Smithwick's on tap, which takes me back to my English pub crawling days.

First of all it's amazing to me how average (or below) the food is in Los Altos. There are a couple of exceptions, The Grill ( difficult to get in), Chef Chu's, Akane (simple place, but good sushi, really good for lunch).

Maltby's is down town but easy to miss. They are able to satisfy a wide range of people looking to get a quick bite, or avoid cooking. Mostly local families and older folks. There lot's of regulars and a good selection of beers. Good place to grab a beer and a bite at the bar. There are some misses on the menu but most of the food is surprisingly good. Owner, James, is very friendly and makes everyone feel welcome.
