“What a pleasure to be aboard!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 24, 2012

This was our first stay at the Hotel Queen Mary and we thought it was a great! Our room was fabulous (mid-ship, harbor view) and we thought the room and all it's "splendor" and uniqueness was fun to be a part. We have cruised 15 times so this was not our first time on a "cruise ship" so-to-speak. So to be in a unique, antique, and historical ship, was quite spectacular for us. Our service was excellent and we were treated quite well. Of course, we are not to "nit-picky" about things and try to enjoy the aspects of what we are given. In any case,... our room did have a bit of a "musty" smell and was a little warm when we arrived in it. But, by opening the port hole windows (2 of them) and turning the anitique fan blowers to "cool air", it was all we needed. We loved the historical aspects of the room and to know that much of the ship and rooms amenities and make-up were original, was intriguing and interesting to us. So, that being said, many of the typical "newness", "updates", and "luxuries" of a typical ship cabin or even a regular hotel room, may not be part of the deal, but it's a historical museum and that's why it shall be enjoyed. We loved it.

During our 1 night stay, we also enjoyed the Princess Diana Exhibit and had High Tea in the Tea Room. Again, we enjoyed both. All-in-all, going into this fun experience with an open mind to the unique "hotel" experience, is part of the splendor. Would we do it again? Yes.

Room Tip: The Harbor View rooms are much nicer than overlooking the parking lot.

This Hotel is way over rated and over priced. We all know it is old but for $193.00 a night you would think it would be at least maintained. It is falling apart, our room looked like it had already been used, They decided 10:30 pm was the time to start vacuuming above us.
DON"T WAST YOUR MONEY HERE $ 59.00 WOULD BE PAYING TO MUCH.

Evan S -

Thank you so much for the feedback and we are really disappointed that you were not 100 percent pleased with your experience aboard the World Famous Queen Mary. Our staff works around the clock to keep the ship, well in ship shape. Our rates vary based on availability, date, room type etc. We have many cheaper options as well...and are you sure that was us vacuuming? We don't do that at 10:30PM - maybe a ghost? :)

I love the Queen Mary. She's a gem, but it's a shame what they've done to her--all those tacky junk shops, the mediocre, overpriced food in the restaurants, and the rude, indifferent, unprofessional service. I'm a local and like to take visiting friends there for lunch or a drink, but now the management requires that you stand in line with the rest of the tourists to purchase something called a food voucher, 15 bucks a person which can be applied to the price of your meal or drinks. But what if your drinks don't add up to that amount? I stood in line for 15 minutes with one ticket window open. They opened a second window eventually which was celebrated in the line, but then they immediately closed the first window and so we went on waiting. I don't mind the voucher thing so much as I do the waiting in line. There should be some mechanism to allow those who just want to come on board for lunch or a drink without having to wait in line behind all those rubes from Nebraska who want to discuss the stupid Ghost Tour with the Long Beach rube behind the window.

This time we had lunch in the Promenade Cafe. The service was cold and the white wine was room temperature and cost me 10 bucks even though the glass was not much more than a shot.

If The Mary is going to survive (And the local paper is always running a story about how she's about to fold.) the management will have to class up the place and make it more attractive to locals like me. You could start with the expensive parking nightmare.

Good luck.

Stayed 2 years ago enjoyed it then so returned but disappointed this time. They have opened The Tea Rooms and enjoyed a lunch their and later during our stay again enjoyed an evening dinning in Sir Winston Restaurant, but then that was the end of our enjoyment. On both nights we were kept awake by inconsiderate and noisy guests located around our room first night noise continued to 3.00am next evening or should I say morning until 4.20am.On returning to the car park we redirected to park some distance from the hotel when we queried it were abruptly told to park there without any explanation. It would appear the dress code for dinning was singlet top for men and thongs (flip flops) as encountered in the Panorama lounge. Many young guess appeared to bring their own sleeping bags as seen leaving in the morning. When you charge top dollar for accommodation I expect better standard.Really all it is now is an expensive Back Packers Hostel

Room Tip: A 2.5 star Hotel

We had just gotten of the Carnival Splendor and checked into the Queen Mary to finish off our vacation before flying home. Mistake. The front desk gal was very cold and curt with us and ended up assigning us to B495 c l e a r at the back of the boat. It was a hike to get us and all our luggage there. We paid extra to get a "harbor view" room which consisted of two small portholes that were so high I couldn't even hardly see out of them. When we walked in the bed looked like someone had laid across the top of it. The hand towels in the bathroom was laying all unfolded on the towel bar and there were no glasses to get a drink. Only 2 overpriced bottles of water for $3.95 each... The room was dark and depressing and had a musty old smell to it. We were tired so turned in early. By 9:30 we were fast asleep only to be woken up by a power brush vacuum upstairs right above our heads. We listened for a couple minutes and then I called the front desk t complain. She asked if we wanted to move (instead of just taking care of the problem). No, we weren't interested in moving rooms at 10:00 at night. She said she would send a security guy to check it out. Over 10 minutes later nothing had changed so I called the front desk again. She said she called a security fella 10 minutes ago. I told her the vacuum was still going as strong and loud as ever. After hanging up, about 5-7 minutes later the noise finally stopped and I was able to drift off again a while later after simmering down. I didn't pay top dollar for a room only to be kept awake by the noisiest vacuum I'd ever heard. It was noisy in the hallways and you could hear other guests walking by talking and doors slamming. Needless to say, our whole stay was nothing to crow about and in fact we ended up getting an earlier flight home. We were so ready to leave. Others that had a pleasant experience, I'm happy for you and wish I could say the same. Unfortunately, it couldn't be more the opposite.

If you want a nice cheerfully decorated quiet hotel, go to Motel 6. They are 1/4 of the price and I can guarantee you're not going to hear a noisy vacuum at 10:00 at night for 15-20 minutes.

Room Tip: Request Not to be put in 495B.

This was our second stay this year, the rooms are nice, the beds are comfortable, and contrary to what others have said, it's been pretty quiet both times. It is really neat to be able to wander the ship and check out the history. It's beautiful and amazing. Parking I thought was expensive. $17 to self park. The Promenade restaurant was decent priced. Portions are HUGE- we shared a meal for both breakfast and dinner, and it was more than enough food for my husband and I. The mac -n-cheese (shared by my two kids) was the best my kids have ever had, and even with 2 of them eating one portion, there were leftovers. We did not do the buffet breakfast and ordered off the menu. The pancakes at breakfast are 3 huge dinner plate sized pancakes-again, plenty to share with one or even two people. We enjoyed the "Chill" Ice palace, but thought it was overpriced ($75.00 for 4 of us with a discount) Overall- we love the QM. You can't beat the history and beauty of the ship.

Room Tip: Having stayed on both sides of the ship, I recommend the starboard side- it's quieter.

We were in the area and local friends recommended a stay at the Queen Mary. We enjoy history so it was a delightful experience walking around the ship and imagining sailing in first class style in the 1930's. The king size deluxe stateroom had modern conveniences without sacrificing the historical feel. We used self-parking and it was awkward to figure out but ok after the first navigation. Our room was quiet and we were not bothered by having neighbors next door. We enjoyed the restaurants and the prices were comparable to other restaurants in the area. Only the coffee stand and the Promenade Restaurant were open for breakfast and the restaurant had an excellent breakfast buffet. Everyone was helpful.
