My wife and her sister went on a whale watching excursion in San Diego several years ago. This year she decided to try a new area to go to. So she picked Long Beach to visit. We found Harbor Breeze tours and decided to book with them. We chose the 12 noon trip. They have a 9 am and 3 pm tour also available. They provide snacks and drinks for your convenience and bathrooms are also on board. With around 80* and the sun shining we opted for our light jackets. One of their FAQ's states you should layer for comfort. Boy were they right! It was fine till we went past the break wall. We soon had our hoods on and she was wearing gloves. I was manning the camera so I couldn't handle it with gloves on. So it's not to much to include an extra jacket or two. As we headed out "Capt. Carl" pointed out different marine life. We also had a marine expert from the local aquarium on board. We saw the usual bottle nose dolphins and an occasional California seal and some sea lions were hanging around one of the buoys. As we went further out Capt. Carl received a call from another boat who spotted a grey whale and we went to investigate. He was able to spot the spout of water and came up closer. He shut off the engines and drifted towards the whale. What we saw next made the whole trip worthwhile. We spotted what they considered a juvenile grey whale playing around with two dolphins. He was rolling around while the dolphins were jumping over and around him. Soon several other dolphins and seals and sea lions were all putting on a great show for us. The whale came up to the port side of the boat and showed us its belly. he then went under the boat and gave the starboard side folks a close up show as well. After what seemed like 45 minutes of the group frolicking around us other boats arrived on scene. Capt. Carl decided it was getting too crowded and he made the decision to head back home. I don't think it could have gotten any better. What an experience for us. He said this was one of the best outings he has ever had. I'm just so glad we were there for the event.

When you go on these tours there is always a chance you will not see whales. We did! We saw a whale, dolphins and a sea lion. The captain stayed 10 minutes longer in hopes to see a whale and we did. That was very nice of him. The ride was so calming. It was cold so take jackets. They seemed to care and not take our money and run they waited as long as they could in hopes to see a whale. The tour guide was friendly and always ensured are questions were answered. The only complaint we have is we had two compliment drinks each. We had a coffee and a coco at the start of the ride. When we headed back I went to get another hot drink and they were completely out of coffee and coco. I was not happy about this. They didn't seem to stock up for the ride. We had to ride the whole 45 minutes back without a warm drink.

Nature being what it is, the boat owners cannot guarantee a whale sighting. We saw lots of dolphins. The whale that we came upon only skimmed the surface of the water, so we did not get the fabulous pictures we had envisioned. It was a great boat ride. You get to see the Queen Mary and surrounding sites. We had a perfect day and enjoyed what sites we were able to see. We bought the combo ticket with the Aquarium.

My family purchased the Aquarium of the Pacific and Whale Watch Combo Package through the Aquarium of the Pacific website. It was 44.99 each for adults and our teens and 25.00 for out 5-year old. I have to say it was money well-spent.
We went on the 12:00 sailing on 12/30/12. We got a glimpse of the Queen Mary on the way out into the open waters. When we got into open waters, we were greeted with a group of sea lions who came out towards our boat, The Christopher. They were so playful and were great photo opportunities. There was a naturalist on-board (Kimmy) who gave a lot of informative things about these sea creatures and how to spot sea lions versus dolphins. While the sea lions were still around the ship, Kimmy directed us to the direction where the grey whales could be spotted. She told us about their behavior and about their migration patterns. The whales were amazing, There were a few of them in the area and we got great shots including the full tale turn arounds. These went on for a good 1/2 hour of just obseving these magnificent animals. The dolphins were around the whales and were all doing their flips.
On the way back to the harbor, we did have choppy waters but it wasn't enough to get me worried. Kimmy, the naturalist went around the boat showing us models of the grey whale we had seen in the waters. She also had as touch samples of the baleen teeth. It was very educational.
On another note, the snacks on board were fairly priced. They had assorted chips for a dollar a piece and candy bars for two dollars. Considering this is a big tourist attraction, I though the price was fair. They also had hot chocolate, soda, and coffee.
The trip took approximately 2 1/2 to 3 hours. We then headed to the Aquarium of the Pacific which is another wonderful place for a family. The dock was at Rainbow Harbor dock # 2 at Long Beach, just a few yards from the Aquarium of the Pacific Entrance. Parking is just across the street and cost us $8.00/ day.
If you get started early, you can do the Aquarium first, then do the whales. There is also a 3:00 sailing. I don't know if this would be good in the winter though as it starts to get dark by 5pm. If you have energy left you can take The Passport, free shuttle to take you to the Queen Mary. This stops right in front of the Dock # 2 harbor. This runs until 12:00 midnight. You can leave your car parked at the Aquarium of the Pacific garage to save money. Parking at Queen Mary cost $20.00. You can take a shuttle back for free (no tips necessary).

Though we didn't get to see any whales :( ... we did get to see bottlenose dolphins and were in the middle of a pod of hundreds of common dolphins. It was very cool, but disappointing not to actually see a whale. I'd go again. Prices were fair.
