“Pleasant surprise!”
Reviewed January 14, 2013

This was a pleasant surprise! Full of charm and very chic! Tiny but very stylish. Staff and guests very friendly and helpful.. Would definitely recommend and stay again. Good location. One negative, the shower was really small.

Overall we had a great stay!

I recently stayed at the Varden Hotel for 7 nights. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The staff is outstanding. I was traveling by myself and found their assistance really helpful. I was informed about a day trip to LA for my day off that worked out just perfect. I was helped with a car rental and directions for another day to Disneyland. They were helpful with restaurant choices and every aspect of my stay. I would go back and recommend the Varden Hotel to my friends.

It's in an historic building, located in downtown, with (authentically) friendly staff, all at a reasonable price. The only drawback is that, unfortunately, downtown Long Beach is a patch of safe/unsafe zones and this hotel is located on the border of each (not their fault but rather the city). But you can't beat the location as you can pretty much walk any where from the hotel (or take the FREE bus around downtown).

The Varden's biggest strengths are its customer service and the cleanliness of the rooms. Jose and Norman were very attentive and friendly. They went above and beyond. We stayed here before and after a 2 week cruise to Hawaii, they remembered our names and where we were from when we returned. They did everything from helping us find the quickest, cheapest, and safest way to Disneyland, to making change, to assisting with luggage, to making taxi arrangements, to setting wake calls, etc. Adina was very friendly, but we did not have much interaction with her due to her schedule. The rooms were small and the shower was a little difficult to work with, but the rooms were super clean. 1 block away was Pine street which had a bunch of restaurants and shops. The location is great! You have easy access to the metro. I would stay here again in a heartbeat. I have stayed at places like the Four Season's in Philly and the Omni Parker in Boston and the Varden of Longbeach is right up there.

Clean and the staff is friendly.

Rooms are small and this is likely the biggest negative...cute and cozy but small. My shower was tiny and hard to shower without touching the wall. No way two people would make in in this room.

Close to all the action , but just at the edge of a bad area of town. For the price, it is fine but for just a bot more you can get a lot nicer.

i really wanted to like this place, and if the "wine tasting" had been something more than a few bottles of cheap-to-average wine set out with some cheese and crackers, I probably would have been more impressed. It was a long slog up to the third floor, to a tiny room in which there was no appreciable desk space of any size. While I agree that this feels like a New York experience, there are plenty of places in LB in which such compromises are unnecessary. The staff was friendly and the proximity to the Pine Avenue district was nice.

We stayed at the Varden for three days prior to a cruise as part of our anniversary celebration. When we first pulled up to the hotel, both my husband and I were disappointed because it looked to be in an industrial area with not much around. We did think that we had made a mistake.

Boy were we wrong! Not only did we receive amazing service from each and every staff person, when we finally met the owner, he too was as helpful, friendly, enthusiastic and hospitable as his staff. Two minutes after we walked through the door, we knew that we had made the absolutely best decision staying here!

The location turned out to be perfect as we had easy access to wonderful restaurants and local tourist spots within a block of the hotel. We spent several days walking all over Long Beach including a great visit to the aquarium. I had tried making arrangements on my own for an LA tour before leaving home and we had given up on the idea because several tour companies told us that we were too far out from LA to do this in a day. When we mentioned it to Larry, the owner, he kindly and swiftly made arrangements for a fantastic day long tour of LA, including pick up and drop off right at the hotel, the next morning, which was a real treat. And we loved our LA tour.

The rooms, although small and boutique-like, were exceptionally clean and comfortable. Beds too. Although we were a bit surprised that the bathroom had only a sliding door and the shower was not all that separate from the rest of the bathroom, we got used to it. There were wine and snacks available every night for guests and staff were always checking in to make sure that we were comfortable and happy.

Our stay at the Varden really was a wonderful and memorable pre-cruise tour for us and we loved Long Beach. This was also a real and welcome change from the often impersonal chain hotels.

For the price, this really is terrific value. I would absolutely stay there again and would recommend this spot to anyone else considering a stay in the area.
