Eastern Sierra InterAgency Visitor Center

Like the visitor center at a National Park, this Visitor Center is staffed by rangers and others well versed in details of the park and the area. We had several long conversations about the geology; got valuable suggestions (and directions) for both hikes and scenic drives.

The Visitor Center also houses a wonderful huge three-dimensional model of the Sierra Nevada region, including Death Valley. This is really helpful in understanding the interplay of mountains and valleys. (It also shows electric transmission lines and aqueducts). Worth a trip over from town just for the map.

A very fine shop, also, with many choices of detailed maps as well as books and souvenirs.

The Lone Pine visitor centre is second to none. A great facility staffed by nice people.
The centre piece is the huge 3D relief map of the region showing that within a short distance the lowest and one of the highest places in the US are found.
From the front of the building and from the gallery windows there is an outstanding view of the High Sierra Mountains and Mt Whitney.
The building is attractive and functional with clean rest rooms and a pleasant garden. The gifts available are good and the art & photos on display are cool.

This place is a must. If you love this part of the country, beware of the bookstore as only Jawbone Canyon has a better one!

Fairly new Visitor Center with good information for tourists and even better information and exhibits to educate the traveler about the Eastern Sierra.

We had to stop here to get our Mt. Whitney Zone permits and rent a bear canister. The folks were very helpful and friendly. They walked us through the permit, the rules and regulations for hiking in the Whitney Zone, and answered our questions. While we did not look too much at all the other offerings they had for sale, it was clear they had a lot of stuff for those who want to learn about the nearby mountains. A few days later when we came back to the center to return the rented bear canister, we asked about what to do with a half used fuel canister for a JetBoil stove. (Could not ship it home by air or UPS, etc.) The folks were able to take the canister and would forward it to a hostel group that could use the fuel.
