You know the Alabama Hills, but perhaps not by name. The hills (actually large rock formations) have been the site of over 400 films beginning with Fatty Arbuckle's 1920 movie "The Round-Up" to Tarentino's "Django Unchained". Although maps for self-guided tours are available at the Chamber of Commerce office downtown, the best way to see the hills is the guided tours during the Lone Pine Western Film Festival, held over the Columbus Day holiday weekend each year. It's easy to get lost, particularly near dusk (as we once almost did), so best to plan your tour during broad daylight. Lone Pine is a great little town to visit and the Alabama Hills are just one attraction here at the foot of beautiful Mt. Whitney!
