“GREAT WESTERNS FILMED HERE!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 16, 2013

You know the Alabama Hills, but perhaps not by name. The hills (actually large rock formations) have been the site of over 400 films beginning with Fatty Arbuckle's 1920 movie "The Round-Up" to Tarentino's "Django Unchained". Although maps for self-guided tours are available at the Chamber of Commerce office downtown, the best way to see the hills is the guided tours during the Lone Pine Western Film Festival, held over the Columbus Day holiday weekend each year. It's easy to get lost, particularly near dusk (as we once almost did), so best to plan your tour during broad daylight. Lone Pine is a great little town to visit and the Alabama Hills are just one attraction here at the foot of beautiful Mt. Whitney!

“Don't Miss This!”

You'll recognize these rocks from all the old westerns which were filmed there. Pick up a driving tour guide at the Film Museum; this is a treat.

“Film Location from Tom Mix to Robert Downey, JR.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 15, 2013

The Alabama Hills was and still is a great location for filming action movies. Tom Mix made films here; Gunga Din was shot here, High Sierra with Bogart, How The West was Won and more recently Iron Man and Django Unchained.

“Great visit”

Worth driving up here to see where all the old Western movies were made. It was very hot when we came so make sure you take water with you and comfortable footwear.

“Our Life in the Alabama's”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 11, 2013

I moved my wife and daughters to the Alabama Hills near Lone Pine, to allow them to get to know nature as I had known it as a young child when my Mom & Dad introduced it to me. The beauty of those old rocks just make you feel like traveling back in time to a simpler way of life. We lived there until 1984, then moved back to the city to resume our busy lifestyles. Wish to live there again someday.
