“A trip back in time”
Reviewed July 1, 2013

We're trying to visit all the missions before our daughter is in 4th grade. This one is very nice. Since it's a state park it's a little different set up. We spent a lot of time wondering the grounds and looking at the animals. If it hadn't been so hot we probably would have stayed longer. It was a very nice visit.

“Ono of my favorite Missions”
Reviewed June 6, 2013

I've been to all the Missions, and this is one of my favorites. Even though it has limited hours, you can walk in anytime during daylight hours. Go early in the morning to see the sun come up on the front of the Mission. Hike the trails up to the top of the hills in front. Lots of grounds, lots of animals! I added photos in entice you.

“Great atmosphere, dwell on the grounds (and see the pigs..)”
Reviewed June 4, 2013

This is not an active chuch or city landmark like some other missions, but a complete, highly impressive historical park out in the country. Rooms are filled with historical reconstructions, outside are a well, native American dwellings, a vegetable garden and even horses and pigs. It's so well done that you're tempted to settle right there. The rustic, very quiet atmosphere is great and can really get to you (even more so than at San Antonio, which is further from main roads but has a bigger and much more developed main building). There's also a modest but very informative and well-organized museum on the grounds.

“Best example of life at a mission”
Reviewed June 3, 2013

We visited this mission as part of our vacation to visit the California missions. It is one of our favorites. The buildings are beautifully restored. This is the only mission we have seen so far that has attempted to present what life was like in the 1820's by keeping sheep, pigs, cows and offering days when volunteers recreate activities such as weaving, pottery, basket making, candle making, and black smithing. We were very impressed with how active the locals were in volunteering at this mission. They take great pride in it. The mission is located on approximately 2,000 acres and has 25 miles of hiking trails. Lots of picnic tables throughout the property, so bring a picnic. Make sure you take the short hike up to the cross on the hill for an amazing view. This is a state park, not a functioning mission. Since this is a state park, if you have your National Park Passport, you can get it stamped here. Nice displays in the visitor center. Don't miss the gift shop (separate building). Stay at the O'Cairns Inn in Lompoc, great prices and an amazing array of free amenities.

“Okay, but definitely 'center of the pack"”
Reviewed June 3, 2013

Nice for a brief stop, especially if you are a Cal Mission geek as I am. Check it off the list of 20+ and move on. There are much better missions in the system to visit, for certain. Just do not go out of your way unless you need the checkmark.
