La Purisima has a lot to offer for a small fee ($6 per car)... It's a great place to walk around and experience what it was like to live at a mission... It provides a huge amount of photo opportunities... We were just passing through and could only spend a few hours (glad we did!)... but, you could easily spend the entire day here...

Unlike Santa Ines, this mission is a state historical part and no longer an active church. The grounds and buildings were faithfully restored in the 1930s (by the Civilian Conservation Corps) and give an excellent idea of the activities (and isolation) of early mission life. There is an excellent visitor center open most days, and they have guided tours daily.

We arrived about 11:00 am and we were just leaving when they locked the gates at 5:00 PM. This is a great place to walk, take photographs, take in a little history, and let the kids run around. Unlike other missions I've been to, this one is set on several acres. The site has been restored, so there are plenty of things to see -- living quarters, kitchens, blacksmith shop, chapel, and more. Volunteers were dressed in costume and prepared to talk about how things were done at the mission if asked. There are plenty of trees and plants labeled to show how the Chumash Indians used them. There are also horses who are happy to take an apple from your hand, as well as sheep, pigs, goats, pigs, turkeys, and more. We encountered many locals out for a stroll or a run on one of the paths, and saw quail and even a coyote. We had fruit and the makings for a small lunch in the car so we went back to get those things and took a break at one of many picnic tables. There is also a visitor center with some exhibits about the indians and the Civilian Conservation Corp's restoration of the mission. The cemetery is not intact, for some reason, but there is plenty else to see. Walking is easy on the paths and there are plenty of trees to keep it shady. There is a fee to park in the lot, but parking is allowed along the busy main highway if you prefer.

We didn't take any of the guided tours, we just took one of our own self-guided tours. My mother's friend told us a bit of the history of the mission, and the other missions in California. The place was very calm, very peaceful. The animals on the mission (they had a couple of paddocks with horses, donkeys, a steer, and sheep) were friendly. Definitely a place to visit if you want to learn some of the history of California, or your religion.
