We stayed here on our anniversary and had an amazing time. The wine barn was a nice touch. We enjoyed walking the property and feeding the chickens. We stayed in Etta's suite in the farm house. I highly recommend the Farm to table dinner paired with the suggested wines. We look forward to visiting again in the near future.

We stayed in the Briar Rose (again!) and thoroughly enjoyed the Farm-to-Table dinner. There were only six of us, and it was intimate and delicious! We hiked right from the property down into Van Damme State Park, and then onto the beach, up to Glendeven Trail Cottage and back to the Inn.

Although the rooms were beautiful, we would probably not stay here again. We too stayed at the loft above the wine bar and there was a great deal of room to spread out. The rooms were beautiful and clean, although the carpet was a bit "old." Unfortunately the B & B was right on CA-1 and there was road noise all night. On warm nights you need the windows open so the noise cannot be abated by closing them . For the price I think there are nicer and quieter places to stay. Additionally, we found the "rules" a bit rigid. Checkout time was 11 AM and it would have been a great deal easier for us to check out at 11:30 AM however this was not something the innkeepers were willing to arrange. Another small annoyance was the inability of the innkeepers to get the printer on the shared hotel computer to function. All in all it was a very nice place but I think you can probably do better for the money.

Room Tip: If you stay here get away from the road.

Thank you for taking the time to write, we always appreciate all feedback!

To our future guests, we post a map of the property showing location in comparison to the views and to the road etc. In the Barn Loft, there is only one window that faces west toward the road, so there is little transfer of noise that way. The walls are built double-thick, so when everything is closed up it is quiet. On the unusual occurrence that it is a warm day here, I can see where an open window would make some noise carry inside. We like to be sure that folks bear in mind that inns in town have foot traffic noise as well as car traffic (as do all of the inns along the coast.)

Our Barn Loft carpet was installed new when we opened the Barn for rent in 2008, and that is considered fairly new, especially given that it is not 100% occupied. The point being that the carpets last longer here than they would in a person‘s house, and also have more rigorous cleaning and maintenance than in a person’s home. They are in fine shape and are on a cleaning rotation schedule.

Regarding our policies, we are a small inn and housekeepers usually need the full amount of time to turn a room, especially the Barn Loft which is nearly 2,000 square feet with three bedrooms. And as I say often, the fairest thing for everyone is to be consistent with our rules. They are not arbitrary and we try very hard communicate them well, so that no one becomes disappointed somehow.

The printer is functioning well. It turns out that another guest had a number of items in the queue, and so by clearing everything the printer was able to work fine. We are sorry for any inconvenience this cased this guest.

Thanks for reading, and we hope to see you soon! John, Owner

Any stay at Glendeven is a truly marvelous and romantic experience. We have been fortunate guests of the inn several times over the last few years, ( through 3 innkeepers in fact!), but like a fine wine, the inn has only gotten better over time. Each stay has been more magnificent than the last. Since John and Michael have taken over as most recent innkeepers, you can tell that is has become a true labor of love, and it shows in every detail. Their additions and innovations have really enhanced the overall in experience. The wine bar, beautiful decor, spectacular views and excellent food are just a few of the inn's highlights that any stay in Mendocino would not be complete without. A short walk to the beach at sunset is an experience not to be missed. With the addition of several new properties added to the Glendeven family, we look forward to returning to our favorite inn for fine wine, delicious food and complete rejuvenation.

While the Glendeven Inn proper has gotten many positive reviews here, I want to warn travelers away from the Beach Trail Cottage, which is down the road from the main inn, and run by Glendeven as a stand-alone booking (no breakfast, no maid service). While the setting is gorgeous and private, the cottage itself has not been properly updated and does not meet the basic standards expected at this price point. Fridge and microwave are ancient, cheap stall shower was difficult to operate and ran out of hot water, vinyl "faux wood" kitchen flooring is cracked and even sunken down in a spot near the sink (I snagged and tore a sock on it), pale wall-to-wall living room carpet is stained. When my husband and two children stayed there in March, there was no working heat in the kitchen (space heaters were provided, but we were given no advance warning about this and learned it only upon check-in, with no partial refund offered). The lawn was overgrown and in dire need of mowing, the grounds untended. There was no extra bedding (blankets etc) provided, and only two washcloths were available in the entire cottage for four guests. Coffee was provided unattractively in Zip-lock baggies in the fridge. When I took up these problems with the managers at Glendeven, I was offered a point-by-point and rather defensive refutation, with no proper acknowledgement of the obvious problems that made this accommodation an overpriced disappointment. No partial refund was offered, despite the lack of working heat in kitchen, damaged flooring, and other issues, and despite my clear suggestion that there should be. So, buyer beware. You don't get what you pay for here, not by a long shot, and no one will take your legitimate complaints seriously should you take the time to present them. Although I have to add that with some basic upgrades and renovations (again, what one would expect at this price point), the Beach Trail Cottage could be a completely charming and worthwhile booking.

Dear future guests, we hope you took this review for what is worth, as we have. The only reason I have let some time go by before responding was because I have disputed this review with TripAdvisr as it does not meet their standards; it was used as to extort a discount from us after this guest checked out. And we have that threat in writing. TripAdvisor has yet to respond to my April 13 request for review of this guest’s post, and so I am writing this response.

I received a three page letter after this family checked out and some quoted highlights are below.

We appreciate and work very hard to accommodate all of our guests daily. All of them.

She complained in emails to us that the cords behind the TV were visible and should be hidden, that there were only overheard lights in the stairway which made it dangerous, that there was not butter or olive oil in our stocked kitchen, quoted here: “There was no olive oil, butter, condiments or other basic supplies so that we were able to cook for our family. We were forced us to buy all our meals/prepared foods outside the house, which cost us extra money we had not anticipated spending. Were we supposed to buy olive oil ourselves?”

(For future guests we stock the kitchen but not with any consumables for health/safety reasons, except salt/pepper, and coffee and sealed teas.)

And this note from her also, “To give you some idea of a comparison: we are presently staying in a vacation rental in Mill Valley that costs $ 110/night for a roomy 2-br 2-bath flat with gorgeous rooms and bedding, a beautiful updated walk-in shower, baskets of all sorts of products and modern kitchen with all the latest stainless steel appliances. The owners left us a bottle of wine, chocolates and a fully stocked mini-fridge with Pellegrino sodas for the kids, bottles of water, etc”

(I asked her for the contact information. It sounds too good to be true and I said I wanted to stay there!) She corrected some of this in a later email as it was overstated, but the message was clear: they got a great deal in Mill Valley and wanted us to match it.

We exchanged three emails and we were professional, courteous and responded to each of her concerns. Because she threatened extortion, we did not feel that offering a refund or discount was prudent. We thanked her for her kind feedback.

To her points above: the carpet is on a cleaning rotation and last was just cleaned again this week. The single faulty baseboard heater has been replaced. There was another functioning heater in the kitchen and the rest of the house is heated and is (and was) functioning fine at the time of her stay. The coffee containers that sprouted feet and walked away have been replaced. Springtime brings quick garden growth, and so the garden is tended and mowed weekly. The house backs to the state park, so at the property line the woods begin. We do not bushwhack or clean the state park woods.

We reviewed the “hole in the floor” that sadly snagged a sock, and found a corner of the linoleum that had pulled up. It has since been glued down.

I invite everyone interested in the cottage to view the Glendeven Photo Blog. I have posted current images of the house and grounds (taken today) for you to see. Many guests have enjoyed the house for many years. It is a lovely quiet and private accommodation three doors from the Glendeven Inn and Cobbler’s Walk properties.

We hope to see you soon! -- John, owner

We've now stayed twice at the Glendeven Inn/Inn at Cobbler's Walk and have already booked our third trip. The rooms are updated, very tastefully decorated, comfortable and clean. The grounds are picturesque and so relaxing. We stayed in the loft above the Wine Barn with our in laws and had lots of room to spread out, and enjoyed the nice, large living room with fireplace. This is a perfect place for a quiet weekend away!

Room Tip: Wine Barn is great for 4-6 people, very spacious. Only drawback is that the bedroom is close to the...

What an absolute gem of a place is Glendeven Inn. We've stayed elsewhere in the beautiful Mendocina area, but will never go anywhere but Glendeven from now on. Wonderful gourmet breakfast delived to the room, chickens to chat with, lamas to stare at -- plus a spacious, comfortable room (East Farmington) with a fireplace. Glendeven has it all and we hope you get to experience this heavenly place soon!
