Murphey's Motel
Reviewed May 1, 2013

It's quite easy to stay in bigger and more luxurious hotels in Mammoth Lakes or in much cheaper hotels in Bishop. But besides the beauty of this place staying in Lee Vining saves time to quickly get to Mono Lake, Bodie Gost Town and then to the Yosemite NP (via Tioga Pass) and make all these points in one day. So the Murphey's Motel is definitely one of the best options for people looking for one night at this strategic crossroad.

Very plain - that is to say ugly - on the outside but clean, spacious and comfortable on the inside. No frills - lobby is size of a large closet. Rooms are provided with refrigerator which is needed in the winter when all the local restaurants close doors early or are just plain closed. Management is nice and accommodating. Bathrooms are spic and span! Price is right!!

To be honest, there's not much acocmmodation in the Lee Vining area. It is in the middle of nowhere on the eastern side of Yosemite by a lake. We just needed somewhere to stay on our way to the amazing Bodie Ghost Town and then on to San Francisco.

Murphey's was a pretty bland motel. Prices for accommodation anywhere near Yosemite are high so this is probably average value for money. But we knew that, were fore-warned and just got on with it. The rooms are pretty dated, the bare essentials were there though.

We went down the road to the Woa Nellie Deli which was okay and fortified ourselves with a few beers at Bodie Mike's.

All in all, the erm... wassissname Motel was just a bit forgettable.

In fact, to reinforce this, whilst I pulled the car out ready to go, my wife checked out, came out of reception and got into a complete stranger's car, that admittedley looked not dissimlar to ours. Oh how I and the group of Dutch walkers laughed as she got out looking sheepish leaving a confused pensioner inside the car. Actually, that was probably the highlight of certainly my stay, anyway.

Room Tip: Get a room away from the road if you can and remember what your car looks like.

We stayed for one night in this motel when travelling as a couple last September.

The reason we stayed here is location. Location, location, location, location :-) 4 to 5 hour drive out from Death Valley, so we still had some time left when we reached Lee Vining, and it only took us about 20 minutes from the motel into Yosemite the next day.
This is also a pretty convenient place to stay if you're looking into make the most of the sunset at Mono lake.
Bodie SHP is about 1 hour's drive away.

Our queen queen room was absolutely huge. Biggest motel room we had during our trip. Didn't use the TV, but the cofee maker was working, and for a nice change so was WIFI.
The room was on the upper of two room floors, and I suspect it might be a bit noisy on the lower level.

Decor is a bit faded and could do with refreshing, but everything was clean. Front desk service was quick, if a bit brisk.

Would definitely stay again, as it is very reasonable value and in such a convenient location.

Room Tip: Ask for a top floor room! No cars outside the window, and no people walking above you. Bear in min...

Me and my family stayed one night at this lovely motel. The rooms were so huge and very confortable and clean. We had a coffe maker, a litlle refrigerator and tv. 2 queen beds , a sofa, a table. The shower was very good. Lee Vining is a little town near the entrance to Yosemite Park and there is the Mono Lake, a breath taking view with the mountains around with snow. We saw the sunset at this place and i wouldn`t forget this moment in all my life. The Motel is full of flowers and Nancy at the front desk is so kind and helpful. There is a little market when you can buy products to have a breakfast at your room.We had dinner at Niceley`s place, near the Motel. There was an apple tree very beautiful in front of the motel. I recommend stay there an hope i will come back.

Room Tip: i stayed in a room in front of the road and was little bit noisy

The hotel does not seem to have been updated since the early 60s with an excessive amont of linoleum and formica, but that soon fades from view as the hotel's friendly staff and cleanliness become an overpowering force.
Internet, although present, is non existent for all intents and purpsoes (34 bits per second is slower than dial-up from the early 80s). The sink in the rooms are placed very low and anyone over 5'5" might beware their lower back if shaving over the sink.

Room Tip: If travleing with lots of photographic gear, request a ground floor room when making a reservation!
