“An excellent accomodation in the Vezere Valley.”
Reviewed September 24, 2013

Our group of four retired rock art enthusiasts spent six nights in the Villa Hibiscus at Le Four A Sel in September, 2013. The accommodations were perfect and the location of the B&B was ideal for seeing the many prehistoric and historic sights in the Vezere River Valley. David and Brenda were excellent hosts who provided information about the area and recommendations for fine dining nearby. We arrived after spending a week in Paris and it was a pleasant change to stay in a lovely and quiet rural setting just outside of the village of Montignac. David, our host, was also kind enough to map out for us a few of the local hiking trials which we hiked directly from our rooms. Since we were on the B&B plan, Brenda and David provided the most enjoyable breakfasts each morning with fresh baked pastry from the local shops. It was an excellent place to relax and see the area.

My two sons (ages 7 & 11) and I stayed in Villa Mimosa in September 2012 for six nights. It was an excellent base for exploring the wealth of fascinating sites in the area, from caves to castles. The house was lovely, with everything we needed - a well-stocked kitchen, large bathroom, and two very comfortable bedrooms. Laundry facilities are a huge plus.

The grounds offer lots of space for children to unwind and the proximity to good country walks and the lovely little restaurant in Aubas is good too.

Brenda and David were so helpful and friendly, yet not intrusive in the least. They struck just the right balance for managing accommodations like this.

This is a great area to visit and Le Four a Sel was a welcome "home" to return to every night!

We stayed in the Villa Mimosa with our 2 children aged 5 and 9. We had a lovely stay there. The gite was charming and was very clean. It has a well stocked kitchen which meant we were able to cook meals when we wanted to. There are 2 bedrooms in the villa, both of which were very large. The downstairs bathroom was also a really good size. It is a beautiful property to stay in, and the surroundings are just lovely. The garden was beautiful and it was good to let the kids run around and play, while we sat in the sun enjoying a glass of wine!!! I only wish we were there in summer, because the pool looked amazing. David and Brenda were fantastic hosts. They were very friendly and had a lot of great information about the local area. I would definately stay there again and would recommend it to other families.

Like many others, this was a return trip. Once again, Brenda and David were incredibly helpful, whether it was giving directions to a shop some miles away, providing extra furniture, suggesting activities or places to eat, or detailing a better route back to the airport. It is an easy place to relax and fish, sunbathe, read, being in the country, yet only a couple of minutes to the restaurants and markets of Montignac. There are red squirrels and pine martens in the grounds, bats at dusk, buzzards and herons, and some birds I could not even recognize. All in all, a good time was had by all.

For the second time we have visited Le Four a Sel . We returned because of the welcome we knew we would get from Brenda and David , they come across as friends rather than people running a business . Their place is beautiful , a tranquil setting with a river forming part of the boundary , all very peaceful and with shaded areas under the trees and a good size pool to cool down when needed . The room we have been given on both our visits is of a comfortable size with a good ensuite facility . Another visit is being planned but to include more of our family maybe next year and we know that the welcome we will receive from Brenda and David will be outstanding .

3 generations of our family, including 5 children, stayed in Villa Orchidee at Le Four a Sel for 2 weeks. The kids loved the pool (which was clean) and all improved their swimming, while the grown ups soaked up the sun. The trees giving much needed shade, as we were there during a heatwave. Some of the men had several early morning sortees to the river, which is at the bottom of the garden, for fishing. We ate lunch and our evening meal in the outside dining area, which was great and made use of the Wi Fi hub located there. The kids made full use of the table tennis table and the play arear. Brenda and Dave were very friendly (as was their dog Cayla) and helpful with local information and there were lots of leaflets available too. The property is perfectly situated for trips to local attractions, such as the various Grottes (pre historic paintings), the beautiful Dordogne river and pretty towns such as Montignac and Domme. The only small comment we have is that the fridge, although large, was still a squash fot 16 people if you want to eat in most of the time as we did . Brenda and Dave might like to think about a small separate fridge in the main room for drinks.
Finally, we can't not mention Table D'Aubas run by Pierre and his wife. It is just 10 mins walk away in the nearby village of Aubas. Great food and really good value. The house wine is from a vineyard run by a friend of theirs in Bordeaux and is excellent. Pierre speaks good English too. Brenda and Dave helped us pre book our food for our visit on the last night so we did'nt swamp them but they did very well catering for 16 of us.

Hi Linda:
Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review .We're glad you and your group enjoyed your holiday with us. The suggestion for a cooler in the dining room of Villa Orchidee is a great idea, why didn't we think of that ! We always strive to improve our service and our product and are constantly looking for ways to make the holiday experience of our guests comfortable and enjoyable. We hope we can welcome you again at Le Four a Sel sometime in the future.

Kind regards,

We stayed two weeks this summer at the « Villa Hibiscus », me, my husband, my two children, a couple of friend with their little baby. The place and surroundings are very nice, close to the beautiful village of Montignac. A small swimming pool very “sympathique”, the children were delighted. Nice outside table to eat in the garden but poor lighting for summer evenings around the table as we loved, too bad…
We have been quite disappointed by the quality of the property and services related to the price ! We know very well that the Périgord is quite expensive but we were expecting better. Two years ago, we spent a week near Angouleme in exactly the same kind of renting place with similar services and this was a lot better. The price of the Villa Hibiscus is definitely too high.
Very little concern from the landlords about the well-being and the comfort, average property, lost of dust, (baby chair was really disgusting), the towels were very old and tired, the bedlinen and pillows of very poor quality.
Playground very tired.
Facilities for the guests such as the washing machines were not quite clean either.
Other, we did not felt very welcome, Brenda was most preoccupied by getting the money for the caution than to say a warm hello as usually expected and received in other locations. We had two friends visiting us for the week-end, she has interrupt our lunch saying in front of them that they could not stay and that they had to find a solution which is totally unacceptable knowing that we rent the Villa Hibiscus on purpose (capacity 8 people).
But, the most important is that there was very close, a huge construction work starting at 7.00 am and finishing around 6.00 pm. The noise was very very disturbing and annoying. We had to forget the quiet and peaceful area as mentioned on the website. As I am sick, and I was specially looking for resting peacefully in the campaign, this has been a huge disappointment. We know that Brenda and David are not responsible for this (it is stated in the contract) but they could at least, inform us in due time, it is called in French “Savoir-vivre”. We have called the city to know if this big construction work were started urgently and they told us that the work was planned long time ago ! No comment.
Anyway, as we say in French, against bad fortune, good heart and we spent nice vacation with our friends under the sun of Dordogne...
Sorry for my English, this is not my language but by respect for Brenda and David, I wanted to give my comments in their language.

The rate of Villa Hibiscus was 1300€ per week which the above guests rented together with another family . A one bedroom cottage for 2 without a pool in Montignac is 400 € / week so at 650 € per week per family ,this is excellent value .The guests benefited from the use of 2 bedrooms per family, our excellent location , plus all our onsite facilities: large garden, playground, table tennis, private fishing , boules area , free wifi .
We always receive our guests including this group with warmth and great hospitality. The most recent review here (titled Family holiday,10 Sept.2012) was written by a group who stayed during the same period . They have rated us highly in these points. All our previous guests have also been satisfied with the cleanliness of our houses and the state of our facilities.
In their initial enquiry the guests stated that their total group size was 7. We accepted their booking request based on these facts as the house can accommodate a maximum of 8 persons only and our insurance liability covers us for this. Had they informed us that they planned to have 2 extra friends to share the house bringing the total to 9, we would not have accepted the reservation . At no time prior to their arrival did they divulge this even after we sent the contract, which they signed and agreed to. It stated : “ONLY the named persons in the contract are authorized to use the facilities at Le Four a Sel and we have a right to refuse the extra persons if this was violated”. At the start of the 2nd week, I discovered their 2 extra friends as they were having lunch in the back garden. I explained that due to our insurance restrictions, we could not allow it. Inevitably this created animosity . In order not to embarrass them further , and conscious that there would be no available alternative accommodation elsewhere , I agreed to let them stay knowing that we were taking a risk with our insurance . I did not even charge a supplement. But despite our act of generosity , this was not appreciated.
The Mairie of Aubas (Mayors office) received notice for emergency work to be done on the weir near our property on the 18th of July, 2012 so this was not a planned activity ( copy of this document has been provided to us which we can email if anyone is interested). The mayor's office can also be contacted on 05.53.51.73.40, Annie GENDRAUD,for verification. Work started at 8am each day NOT 7am. This was beyond our control, but the guests were unhappy because they expected to be pre informed about this before they were due to arrive But since the Mairie of Aubas kept reassuring us that the work would be completed soon , we did not find it necessary . However as always , repairs do not go as planned and the work continued up to the time the guests arrived . It is unfortunate that our guests experienced this during their holiday and we fully understand that it has affected their enjoyment of their holiday. We are pleased to say that the noise now has stopped and our current guests are enjoying the peace that our property offers.
