This is the best spot in the OC -- friendly people, quaint shops, good food. Beautiful hills lead up to the coast and a wonderful walking beach with tide pools.

The hotel is beautiful. It's laid out very well with outdoor space for taking in the views at every turn.

The service is really wonderful.

We stayed in the oceanfront three-story building. The balconies gave us absolutely stunning sunset views. A great wine/cheese shop down the street gave us the rest. The rooms are so close to the water that apparently some guests complain about the ocean noise. But we slept great both nights.

The rooms are a bit outdated -- especially considering the price per night. The carpet was a little worn, and the bathrooms were nothing special. There did not seem to be any air conditioning, so I would imagine that it could get very warm in the summer.

The restaurant has amazing food -- We are in the restaurant business and regularly seek out good chefs. This was top-notch.

One day, the coffee shop wasn't open until after 9am, which was a little annoying. They didn't offer an explanation.

We stayed in the Vista Suite on a weekday so the price was more reasonable. The place doesn't really live up to the hype....yet it was still beautiful.

ROOM: Plush & relaxing.....it was overcast during our stay so we couldn't get full use out of our sun deck. Loved the style and small touches.

FOOD: It was 'alright'....I'd expect more from this resort. We only ate lunch there and then went out for the rest of our stay. We visited Savory's and the coffee shop across the street.

SERVICE: Excellent, we checked in very early and were taken care of by all the staff (Valet, Spa, Restaurant, Check-in). They were polite and down-to-earth. We would recommend this resort to friends.

We really liked this location and the quality of the facilities. However when we needed help, the bellman was not interested. Finding our room was a challenge and when the front desk asked the bellman to help us he declined (once he learned that we didn't need his help with our small bag). That was a bad start that after 3 days was offset by a great location and nice facility.

We have just returned from a fantastic stay at the Surf & Sand Resort. The hotel is right on the beach with views over the Pacific Ocean and ear plugs provided if the sound of crashing waves is too much for you! All staff were very helpful and although a bit more expensive than we would normally pay - well worth it. Located 1 mile from the Centre of Laguna with plenty of bars/restaurants within walking distance. Car park $30 per night issteep but we parked in the street about 3 minute walk from the hotel without cost. The valet helped us with our hire car when we had trouble with the trunk en route to LAX. A great hotel with fantastci views, pool and deck.

What a romantic anniversary weekend! We were delighted with the Surf and Sand hotel, which is right on a lovely sandy beach. Staff were excellent throughout our stay...the valets were astoundingly quick, the staff at Splashes restaurant were friendly and professional.

We booked Surfside room #410, furthest north on the property, which is the quieter end. Our room was on the 1st floor, with a balcony right over the sand... At high tide the waves were just below us. From our balcony we saw sandpipers darting about the edge of the surf, and at night, there was a path of moonlight on the ocean. Beautiful.

Very nice homes share the beach front with this hotel. In January, the beach is peaceful, without any of the summer crowds. The hotel is right on the sand.

Our King bed was angled to face the ocean, and also to face the TV. It was a clever angle. The moderately sized room feels larger because of the ocean view. At night if you turn out the lights and kneel up on your bed from this 1st floor Surfside room you can see the ocean from the bed, and you can hear the ocean from your room even with the balcony door shut.

We booked the Live A Lot Package described on the hotel's web-site and therefore felt we were getting a lot for our money, especially considering we were right on the beach! Our package included dinners at the excellent Splashes restaurant on the property plus some other benefits. We had dinner with a sunset view at 5:30 (January)! Romantic!

There isn't any air conditioning, but there's a fan. We don't like air conditioning so this suited us fine. This is January and it was unusually fine sunny weather in the day-time, cooler at night. Never needed air conditioning. (During an August heat wave it would be hot in the room, I am thinking.) Most of the year you don't need air conditioning in southern California.

If you like quiet ask for rooms that aren't near the hotel's bar, pool, or restaurant area. I requested a quiet room and we were very happy with our room.

Some reviewers have mentioned the ocean being loud. It sounded just right to me...if you book a room on a beach, you want to hear the lovely ocean shushing you to sleep. I tend to wake up a few times at night, and it was much nicer waking to hear the ocean, instead of sleeping at another hotel and waking to hear traffic somewhere else in town!

Beach access is so easy at this hotel.

We had very clear weather during the last weekend in January, and we could see both San Clemente Island and Catalina Island from our balcony!

From this hotel you can walk to various restaurants, cafes, and some small art galleries. But it's a bit too far to walk all the way to Main Beach. It's a very short drive to Main Beach and to the pretty little laid-back downtown area of Laguna Beach.

We loved the laid-back yet luxurious feeling of the friendly Surf and Sand Hotel.

Beautiful Hotel. Stayed there for 2 nights and really couldnt be happier. Alot of times you see amzaing pictures before you go to a hotel and are disappointed once you get there (the room, prox to beach, etc)....this place is right on the beach and has spectacular views up and down the coast. Walking distance to shops, but probably not walking distance for many all the way downtown.

After a disappointment on Coronado Island, I promptly booked the Surf and Sand in Laguna as the off season price was competitive. With a room located right on the beach and all the attractions in Laguna, its hard to beat the Surf and Sand for price/quality return on investment. The rooms have LCD flat televisions, in room movies you can order, plus a dvd player. There is a business center on site if you need to print items. If you can get a corner room, its a plus. We stayed on the top floor floor with a corner view and had great views of the Pacific Ocean and Northern beaches. The only comment on the Surf and Sand is that it looks like after the last time I was here four years ago it could use new carpet and some paint touch up in the restrooms and on some doors. The overall property is still one of the best values in Laguna. Its not the Montage or the Ritz but its a great quiet retreat beachfront that is hard to beat for under $400 per night. They do tag on an additional parking fee that is steep like most OC hotels. Location is hard to beat! The staff is helpful, friendly. They stock your room with Aveda products. The bed is pretty comfortable, the sound of the ocean is tranquilizing. The Spa is really great, they do a nice job on massages and facials. the work out room is smaller but modern and adequate for a really great work out. If you book during cold weather, request an additional space heater for your room, as they are not designed for inadvertent weather. You can book rooms that also have fire places. In the winter, the pool is heated to 80 degrees according to the pool attendant.
