“Amazing Views!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 2, 2013

Our stay at Surf and Sand Resort was absolutely amazing. The hotels location in Laguna is walking distance to restaurants and shopping ( if you decide to even leave the hotel) . The valet services were so accommodating upon check-in and Jeff delivered our luggage before we even made it to our room.
All of the rooms have ocean views and are really light and have been designed very well. It was so nice to be able to watch the waves crash from our balcony and from almost every other location on the property.
We enjoyed most of the day by the pool and ordering food from Splashes, which was really delicious.
I would highly recommend staying at Surf & Sand. We felt like we were the only guests staying there!

Room Tip: We were on the first floor in the 200 building, we felt like we were so close to the beach. Our view...

If you ever come to the surf & sand, make sure they don't give you room 453. It's the worst hotel room I've ever stayed in. It's above a kitchen and smells like food, It has no lights in the ceiling and no lamp near the desk, I'm sitting at a dark table writing on my lap top which is the main light source. There is a party right outside my door and it's impossible to go to sleep. The view out the patio door is a brick wall. It really should not be classified as a hotel room. I came all the way from Atlanta Georgia and it's shockingly terrible, I'm totally disappointed.

A wonderful hotel, hidden in a quieter location and impeccable service. You are treated like royalty upon arrival and they have everything available -- spa, restaurant, excellent shopping within walking distance and beautiful rooms. A great anniversary get-a-way or just a weekend of sunshine and fresh costal air! I love the place.

Room Tip: I prefer the guest resort rooms, versus the hotel rooms, but both are VERY nice. The hotel rooms ar...

This resort was just ok for us. Granted, we might be spoiled in that we live on the west coast of Vancouver Island, so although the scenery was beautiful it probably doesn't hold the same magic for us as it would for someone who lives in the city or away from the ocean. Went for a 3 night getaway and thought we'd try out Laguna Beach and this resort. Having read the reviews on the rooms we figured it would be a real treat to get one of the suites, settled on one of the Upper Catalina's. We got the suite right at the top of the stairs that lead down to the lower levels....I believe it was 448? In any case - I do not recommend. Not for over $1000 a night. The exterior door lends no sound proofing at all so we could hear everyone walking by and I'm sure they could hear us! There were a group of young girls partying across the "hall" and their cigarette smoke filled up our room, not to mention we could hear every bit of their conversation. The suite was in nice shape and clean (aside from the dirty pillowcases that were left on one of the tables in the living room??) but the view was half blocked due to the building in front of us, and the patio had zero privacy. The master bed was also right next to the exterior door so we knew we would not get any uninterrupted sleep due to the outside noise. Anyhow, nothing was a huge deal, but at those prices we were expecting quite a bit more. The staff, to their credit, was wonderfully understanding and moved us immediately to a corner room in the Tower......much, MUCH nicer. It was cozy and bright and the view was incredible! So I completely agree with most of the reviews on this site......book a tower room on the lobby floor or higher (not lower if you can help it)!! The sound of the waves is incredible and I can honestly say I had the best sleeps during our stay.
Staff is super helpful and we were happy with our spa treatments as well.
We only ate breakfast in the hotel restaurant but it was delicious.
Honestly you can tell the hotel is older and it could use a real facelift, especially on the exterior and around the pool. However, the weather was super chilly when we were there, and I think had the California sun been out I would not have noticed any of this!!

Overall it was a nice stay but don't waste your $$ on a suite when the tower rooms are nicer.

Room Tip: Tower room, corner, lobby level or higher

What a wonderful experience we enjoyed at the beautiful Surf and Sand Resort. From the moment you arrived until the day you leave you get top notch, VIP treatment from the entire Hotel Staff. The accommodations are First Class and the restaurants are the same. Not to mention the location, it's a short stroll to the heart of the Village and Main Beach area. We park our car on arrival and don't use it again until we checkout.

We have been coming to visit Laguna for 30 years and have stayed in almost all of the Hotels there. None come close to the level of hospitality and amenities you enjoy at the Surf and Sand Resort. For the most memorable sunset possible, be sure to visit Splashes Bar downstairs on the beach. Huge windows look out at beach level and "Ken" might even be tending bar that evening which will make your experience even better...if that's even possible.

To sum up, nicest rooms, ocean front, able to walk in the Village to shop, and great food and cocktails in both Splashes Restaurant and Splashes Beachside Bar. We can't wait to visit again.

Room Tip: The Tower Rooms are our favorite. Wonderful view and you are directly over the Beach.

We've been coming to the Surf and Sand for the last 10 years. We usually try to make it here at least twice a year. And there's a good reason: It is one of the best hotels in Southern California. Many places that use the Pacific Ocean as their selling point, don't feel they have to provide nice rooms, good food, accommodating staff, or service-oriented help. The Surf and Sand takes none of that for granted. The fact is, the hotel provides all of the above and it just happens to be situated right on the water. In fact, because of all those amenities, we feel we barely need to leave the room. For dinner, we order room service and sit on our balcony and watch the sunset. No restaurant has better food AND a better view! And, if you like to fall asleep to the sound of crashing waves, just open the sliding door and snore away! The only disappointing part about the hotel is, well, at some point we have to leave.

I have been coming to the Surf and Sand for longer than I like to remember....back when it was just a motel! Through the years, in all its incarnations, it just keeps getting better and better. The location is amazing, and sleeping to the waves each night is the best sleep elixir ever. The spa is gorgeous, and Shannon, the massage therapist, gave the most intuitive and theraputic massage I have ever had! And I've had plenty. For all of my travels, and all of the top Eurpoean Hotels I have stayed in (The Ritz Paris, Hassler, Roma, Claridge's London to name a few) The Surf and Sand is my favorite hotel in the world. I am admittedly a beach girl, but the staff, the location, the food at Splashes, the spa....it's all that I ever want, and so attainable. The staff in particular, to a person, seemed so delighted that we were delighted. It was adorable!

Room Tip: The Tower rooms are the best - right on the beach. Other rooms can be beyond the pool - still great...
