My wife and I first visited SoCal eight years ago when we traveled to a conference in Ontario, just outside Los Angeles. Since we had a rental car, we took a drive down to Laguna Beach on our last afternoon there and had an amazing time. The night ended with a wonderful dinner with college football and a great variety of CA microbrews on tap.
Sadly, as much as we enjoyed our night in Nov. 2005, we could not recall the name of the place that we went to when we returned recently. As we retraced our steps, though, some things became more and more familiar until we finally found the House of Big Fish!! This was it! It is an upstairs restaurant and bar adjacent to a public parking garage, and we happened upon it on a Sunday afternoon, the last week of the NFL 2013 season, with half of the TVs showcasing the local Chargers game (fighting for their playoff lives against the Chiefs), and the other TVs on the Packers-Bears game (for the NFC North title and playoff spot) and the 49ers-Cardinals game.
We secured two seats at the end of the bar next to a couple of Bears fans (at the bar were also a few Packers fans), but the entire place was dominated by Chargers fans. It was a lot of fun experiencing the ebb and flow of the fans, and the mood turned euphoric when the Chargers rallied to win in OT.
The beer was ice-cold; I had a few Mission Brewing Company Hefeweizens. The food that we ordered was very good (not great); I had the blackened fish burrito w/ quinoa, and my wife ahd the Hangover burger with a fried egg on top.
This place is a lot of fun when football is on the TVs. I'm very glad that we found it.
