“Good Planning Produced a Good Stay”
Reviewed February 25, 2008

We are a busy couple but had one night to celebrate our 32d wedding anniversary. Our goal was to enjoy a one night weekend stay exploring the town of Laguna Beach. We decided that we wanted a place that was moderately priced, allowed us to park the car and walk to just about anywhere within the town. Some of the other hotels required a two-night stay so, after reading the reviews in TripAdvisor, we contacted the hotel directly and requested Room 115 which was recommended by an earlier reviewer. We expected assorted, disconnected buildings as well as some staff attitude.

We were pleasantly greeted when we checked in and were permitted to go to our room many hours before the scheduled check-in time. It took a few minutes to figure out where the room was located but we were rewarded with the best view of any hotel or, for that matter, any house located in Laguna Beach. The room was clean, had a kitchen with microwave oven, and a wide balcony with 180 degree views of the ocean and another 90 degree view of the town. The bed was comfy, comfy and the ocean sounds early in the morning were delightful.

The hotel is not fancy pantsy so if you are seeking a resort type experience you should probably go somewhere else. The complex looks like it was recently painted but had a little ways to go with elevators and stairwells. It is a non-smoking hotel with a stiff penalty for people who wish to flaunt the rule.

For us, it was perfect to make a martini and watch the surf from our balcony during "cocktail hour" rather than pay $20 per martini in the lobby of the Montage. We are not cheap but we are not stupid and we especially wanted to stroll (not drive) after cocktails to any of the vast assortment of nearby restaurants and galleries.

Overall, if you don't need room service and appreciate decompressing right in the center of Laguna Beach without hurting your wallet, then Room 115 is the place to be. We are sure that there are other equivalent rooms but we never checked them out.

On Sunday morning, while reading the real estate section of the newspaper, there was an ad for a $17,000,000 beach house with a picture of its view. We had to laugh because our view was better.

By the way, when we checked out, we received smiles from the staff. For us, there was no attitude, no hassles and no problems.

Stayed for 2 nights at Vacation Village. Very nice workers, beautiful view, room was fine nothing fancy but clean & sufficient. Only things that wouldnt bring us back -.1- the pools are shaded & small & no beach view from pools. 2- thin walls- even with the crashing waves which was great- you can still hear your neighbor and first thing in the morning with some kid yelling in the next room is not fun to wake up too. (Of course the bratty kid is not the hotels fault.)3. No microwave in rooms.
Otherwise it was a nice experience. The town is adorable with tons of shops & restaurants all in walking distance- great location of this hotel. Give it a B+ rating. Ate at The Cabana restaurant & The Cliff (great views) which were both excellent & had a quick breakfast at Zinc cafe which was not good unless you like dry toast. : ) But if we went to Laguna again we would probably stay at a different place. The price is the most economical for the area. If we were staying longer - maybe rent a house or something fancier. Southern California is just gorgeous though...

Vacation Village is vintage 1950s. It has a unique setting with several different buildings and a wide variety of room layouts from studio to 2 bedroom. The hotel overlooks and borders the ocean. Nice pool and huge hottub for your soaking pleasure. Room rates are very reasonable.

My mom and I took a little break to come to Laguna Beach last weekend, October 13th through the 15th. My mom had not been back to Laguna since 1991 and I have not been there since 2001, so we thought it was about time to return.

First of all, the location was perfect! We parked the car upon arriving and did not have to move it until we left to come home to Tucson. We were able to walk everywhere we needed and wanted to go in Laguna Beach from your hotel. I was especially excited that Costa Azul Surfboards was right next to the hotel, right next to our room (#37). I am a surfing fan as is my boyfriend, who is a surfer and shaper in Portugal. So being close to all of the surf shops was important to me. We went to all of them in town and I spent way too much money, but that's what you do when you go out of town!

The beach access was great. What a perfect location and so much beach to walk! We thoroughly enjoyed walking from the hotel to the North end of Main Beach and then back down South of the hotel as far as we could go. I guess we picked the perfect time to come to California as well - the beach was not over-crowded but we had plenty of entertainment watching the surfers, the people walking by and the many dogs of Laguna Beach! The weather was wonderful - plenty of sunshine and cooler evenings. Doesn't get much better than that! The beach was so clean, too, that's always a plus.

I read several reviews for Vacation Village online before making our reservations. There were some pretty bad ones, but we're not snobby or picky people. I chalked it up to people who like to complain about everything - I'm sure you know the type! (I worked in the hotel/resort business for several years, so I know how it is when those people come to stay.) However, we found nothing to complain about during our stay. The room was clean, neat, everything worked, the comforters on the beds and the pillows were cozy for the cool California nights and the computer in the lobby was a nice surprise, too.

Overall, we enjoyed Vacation Village and hope to come back soon. Thank you for your time and keep up the good work!

I was a bit nervous when i first arrived at this hotel after reading all of the horrible reviews, but my experience was good. The front desk staff were very nice and answered any questions we had thoroughly. Our room was decent, but it did need a few improvements. The Walls are paper thin though. We had a street view and the street was very loud at times! It would probally be worth your money to book an ocean view room. This hotel is in an amazing location, the beach was awesome and we were able to walk everywhere else in Laguna quickly! I would recommend this hotel to others for the fact that it was decent for the price we paid and it was in a great location! We had an amazing trip and i will definatly be going back to The OC!!

I Highly recommend going to The Cabana Bar and Grill for drinks and Food. Amazing service there and great drinks! Also you should take the OCTA (Orange County Transit) Bus #1 and go to Newport Beach and go to Fashion Island! Definatly worth the $1.25 you pay for the bus ride!

The location is wonderful because it is right on the beach and the hotel supplies you with beach chairs, umbrellas, and towels. However, the hotel is a strange conglomeration of older buildings and there are very narrow, sometimes dark walkways to the beach. It was confusing to try to find our way through the place. Also, although our rooms had seemingly new carpet, and the bedsheets were nice, the furniture was outdated as was the bathroom. We were in room 17 right above the check in lobby. I think the hotel is trying to renovate so you should ask for a new room.

The hotel is very close to various restaurants, though you may have to walk a few short blocks to get to a family friendly place. (There is a KFC next door though.)

From the start, a giant mess!
The room, small and old, with stains on the side of the mattress, the bathroom had an odd red mold like stuff in the shower, no tub and the TV hissed
Location was great! Great restaraunts right there, thank god, cause you could only sleep in that room with a buzz on

we arrived to a confused front desk
then were informed that we had no res. I had all my info written down and gave my only copy to the manager, almost an hour later, and a promise that they would find us a room, they did.
2 days later, after a late breakfast, our key did not work, only to find out, that we only had the room the 2 nights, and were TO check out that day!. Wrong! they were not nice nor appoligitic(sp)
Acttually, rude about. Checked my info once home, and sure enough, our res. were for the 3 days and payed for in advance
We were able to stay the extra night, but only after ruddness and ugliness had ocurred
