Description: In 1912, at the bend of Forest Avenue, 23 year old Joe Jahraus opened the Laguna Lumber Company, he and his father(cigar maker, first postmaster and real estate agent) built the beautiful French Normandy building that is here today. Prior to the lumberyard opening, building supplies needed to be dragged in by mule or floated in on the tides, and therefore, Laguna Beach had less than three hundred permanent residences. After the lumberyard opened, the area began to grow at unprecedented rates, transforming it from a tent town into a thriving city. Laguna Lumber operated for seventy three years, sixty two of them in this location and its' architecture, influenced by Joe's tour abroad in World War I, is one of the most significant influences on the town's aesthetic. Half timbers, mud walls and shingled roofs grace many of the downtown storefronts and homes throughout the city because of this landmark. Today, 384 Forest is home to Lumberyard - a contemporary American restaurant.

Tuesday night, I got together with one of my friends to celebrate her birthday at the Lumberyard Restaurant in Laguna Beach. Little did I know that they do a Tuesday night half price special on their entire wine list by the glass.

I LIKE the Lumberyard. They have decent food (the crab cake salad is the best salad in town), they have friendly servers, fantastic bartenders who actually remember your name even if it’s been a while, and they have a 50% off wine list on Tuesday nights that no other restaurant in town can beat. Seriously . . . Rombauer Chardonnay for $10 a glass instead of its usual $20/glass? “The Sum” Cab-Syrah for a mere $7 a glass? Someone wants to whine about that?

Combine that 50% off wine list with a Monday-Friday happy hour appetizer menu at just $6 per appetizer and, let’s face it, it’s a pretty cheerful event (their signature zucchini planks with lemon aioli shouldn’t be missed). Suddenly, we’re not paying Laguna Beach prices for the privilege of being in Laguna Beach. Bonus points to The Lumberyard for making that happen.

Where to find the Lumberyard: The Lumberyard Restaurant in Laguna Beach is at the end of Forest, 2 blocks up from Main Beach. It’s intersecting street is, ehrm. Forest (don’t ask).

Great food, drinks and atmosphere. Right across from historic city hall and located in the downtown, this is a locals favorite. The servers are friendly and very attentive.

I have dined at the Lumberyard three times now in hopes of learning to like the place. I live in Laguna and the Lumberyard is conveniently located downtown. The food is only OK but when I'm paying the prices I'm paying at the Lumberyard I hope the food would be better. My main problem with the lumberyard is how loud and dark this restaurant becomes. They have sporting events broadcasting over the bar with people cheering, yelling, and being obnoxious.

If you are going to dine in Laguna and want better service, a quieter atmosphere, and light to actually read the menu then I would recommend that you dine somewhere else.

We stopped by the Lumberyard for lunch because it was close to our parking meter. They had a midday happy hour, so we had a drink. I am alergic to wheat and gluten so my choices are always limited. Our server was nice enough to check all ingrediants and recommend an awesome steak salad. She was nice but unattentive. My man had a prime rib sandwhich, which he said was excellent. Overall an average experience.
