You cannot beat the proximity to beach, downtown, Art Festival, and restaurants but that's all it has going for it. Rooms are OUTDATED and the first floor hall all the way down to end smells of urine. The restaurant as advertised has a magnificent view but the food was mediocre. I personally would spend a little more to secure better accommodations.

Room Tip: Be sure not to get a room on first floor.

The hotel is old and in some cases not well taken care of. However we had a good experience with a very friendly and helpful staff. The wedding was very well done and enough staff to go around. The room was old but fairly clean. The bed was comfortable and clean. The bathroom was old and reasonably clean. All in all we enjoyed the stay and found waitresses, and other staff friendly and made the stay enjoyable.

Just returned back from staying at this historic and quirky hotel as you call it- I actually enjoyed my stay immensely. True- it was not the Surf and Sand down the street (which is truely amazing) but I like being able to walk to everything - and I do mean everything - in the downtown area- even walked to the Pageant of the Masters ! Everything was close- views were great- my room overlooked main beach which was great for people watching. The views in the morning over the downtown area and the hills with the marine layer fog/mist was amazing. True- first impression of the room was a bit concerning- but our beds were clean and comfy- and I thought the water pressure in the shower was perfect! The lack of air conditioning had me worried- but turned out to not be an issue- possibly because of the time of year we were there- but we slept with windows open and enjoyed the evening sounds of Laguna Beach! I had no issues with their historic plumbing! Parking did cost $20 per night- but we had no issues with availabiity or the friendliness of the man who assisted us there every day of our trip. Our waitress at the restaurant was friendly and attentive- Sherry - and made every meal eaten there very enjoyable. The location and view from the restaurant was amazing! we were on the second floor- room 217- which again offered views of the water, main beach and the down town area- would I stay again? absolutely-

Room Tip: you will have traffic noise on the side we stayed on- especially in the morning- but the views were...

Such a disappointment. This famous hotel is not being treated as the gem she should be! OK the room was tiny, but a banquet chair and an occasional chair with a cigarette burn in our ocean front room? Was this left over from the basement storage? Nicer pieces can be found in any consignment/thrift store. Saved only by a convenient location with parking and two very good (and large meals). Looking for a different hotel next time.

Room Tip: I would not recommend this hotel.

This is an old hotel probably built in the '20's or '30's which is privately owned. It is right on the Pacific Ocean with its own private beach and within walking distance to the Pageant of the Masters. Those are the good things about it. Also the bed was comfortable and the linen was clean. When I called to make reservations, I was told they served a continental breakfast and had WiFi.

When we checked in we were told that the continental breakfast had been stopped some time ago. The WiFi was not in your room but in the downstairs hallway. The room had no airconditioning, the bathroom had black mold growing on the shower. The toilet was the original toilet I think from the time the hotel was built. The toilet seat was broken, there was a ring around the inside of the toilet and the floor was filthy.

The windows in the room had ugly paint chipping (hopefully not lead paint from the '30's) and no screens on the windows. If you opened the windows to get the breeze, the bugs came in; if you closed the windows all you had to keep the room cool was a ceiling fan which wasn't well attached to the ceiling.

The continental breakfast that we were supposed to have was replaced by breakfast in the restaurant (you got 25% off for eating there as a guest of the hotel) which charged $14 for a bagel with cheese.

Try some other chain hotel further down the beach when you go to Laguna Beach. Stay away from this one. The owners just don't care to make this hotel half-way decent.

Room Tip: Choose another hotel.

No air conditioning in this hotel, paint peeling off the walls, the bathroom was like an old, dirty gas station. There was random furniture (chairs from the dining room) in the room. The beds were small and uncomfortable. The elevator was out of service half the time.
They added a 20% service charge to the bar bill for delivering out to the beach and setting chairs for us. This is on top of the expected tip.
There was a musty smell in the rooms and hallway.
It was truly like staying in a hostel.
It's truly a shame this hotel is like this. It's in a great location with superior beach access, obviously prime real estate.
Update this place and give it a good cleaning!
