Bob Cunard, the proprietor of Cunard’s Sand Bar, is a living ‘old school legend’ here in the desert. He’s owned multiple restaurants and bars, was a top amateur golfer in his younger years and has lived a very interesting life. I believe that Bobby knows more people in the desert than just about anyone else I can think of.

A very nondiscript place from the outside, but really nice inside. We sat in the bar area, where the piano was, and loved it. It is not your typical bar area, but more a resaurtant feel. The food was very good and the serving help terrific. The music with Johnny was an extra plus.

We recently took friends there to dinner, and once again it did not disappoint. The piano tinkling away, the player singing something I may or may not remember. Who cares!

Whodathunk....devilled eggs!!!???? They are great, just like Auntie so and so used to make!
My wife is not a fish eater, but she had the sole - fried with a panko crust, along with french fries - wow, she loves fish and chips, but this one was on a smear of yummy lemon butter. I had the fish as well, but just grilled.

Of course in the US we can take our own wine we enjoyed this with a wonderful 1999 Chateauneuf du Pape - I know, red wine and fish, but again - who cares. It was fun, and our server was brilliant. Can't wait to go back because unusually, we did not have ONE complaint.

If you are expecting patronizing faux fine dining....go somewhere else. This is real!

This restaurant is so plain on the outside that one would almost discount it, but the food was excellent and the service even better. The only thing that I can add to the comments that other reviewers have made is that the bar is not the typical bar scene. We reserved a table in the dining room and peeked into the bar on our way out. To our surprise, it had tables set like the ones in the dining room and we regretted that we hadn't had a table there. If you want to enjoy an excellent meal while enjoying entertainment in a retro establishment, ask to be seated in the bar!

He’s owned multiple restaurants and bars, was a top amateur golfer in his younger years and has lived a very interesting life. I believe that Bobby knows more people in the desert than just about anyone else I can think of.

Cunard’s Sand Bar was originally a biker bar when Bobby bought the building about 27 years ago. The joint isn’t fancy but it certainly makes up for that with character. Pete, the bartender, has been tending bar for all of those 27 years and he’s served countless celebrities and has the stories to match. Many of the servers have worked at Cunard’s for decades, too.

My wife, Sheri and I visit Cunard’s several times each year when we have a hankering for a fun old school dinner. Bobby’s son took over the chef’s duties this year and the menu has been updated. We usually enjoy one of several pasta dishes, chicken, and an occasional ‘Surf and Turf’.
Cunard’s offers dinner specials most nights and is noted for old school dishes like sand dabs, fried chicken and pork prime rib. Most dinners include your choice of a small salad or soup. The food is good, the portions are generous, and the server’s welcome regulars back year after year.

Patrons trend heavily on the silver side of life but younger people can often be spotted taking in the scene, as well. My wife often enjoys being the youngest person in the restaurant! The building doesn’t look like much from the outside, but judging from the number of high-end cars in the valet parking lot diners are well aware that there’s more to the story inside than meets the eye outside.

Entertainment is offered on most nights including Bill Marx on the piano several evenings a week. Bill is the son of Marx Brothers great Harpo Marx, and he certainly has some stories. Bill’s mother, Susan Marx, also had a successful show biz life as actress Susan Fleming who appeared in movies with John Wayne and W.C. Fields, to name just two. Guests famous and otherwise tend to drop in to vocalize on many nights.
